The full form of SCP is Single-Cell Protein. It is a protein derived from microorganisms, chiefly unicellular organisms like algae, bacteria, and yeast. Interestingly, SCP has appeared as a promising alternative source of protein as it has a high nutritional value, is sustainable, and has the potential to address global world security concerns. Moreover, it is produced by cultivating microorganisms in a controlled environment, providing them with energy sources for growth and nutrients. The resulting Biomass is harvested, processed, and dried to obtain SCP powder.

Common Uses of SCP

Single-cell proteins are used in the following sectors:

  • It is used in the production of protein-rich ingredients for food products like yogurt, bread, and meat substitutes.
  • SCP is a protein supplement for aquaculture and livestock to enhance their growth.
  • Biotechnology is another common use of SCP as you can use it as a source of amino acids, enzymes, and other valuable biomolecules
  • SCP is also used in the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industry.
  • It can be used as a biofuel feedstock for the production of biofuels.

Sources of SCP

There are various microorganisms through which SCP can be sourced from:

  • Yeast: Candida utilis, Torulopsis gropengi, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are commonly used yeast strains.
  • Algae: Spirulina platensis, Chlorella vulgaris, and Scenedesmus obliquus are among the algale species.
  • Bacteria: Bacillus subtilis, Methylococcus capsulatus, and Rhodopseudomonas acidophila are also used for SCP production.
  • Fungi: Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger, and Rhizopus cyclopean

What are the Advantages of SCP?

These are the following advantages of single-celled organisms:

  • Its production requires less water, land, and energy.
  • SCP can contain up to 60% of protein which makes it a valuable source of essential amino acids.
  • SCP is rich in minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.
  • SCP can be incorporated into various food products and applications.

What are the Disadvantages of SCP?

These are the following disadvantages of single-celled organisms:

  • Due to the controlled fermentation process, it can be more expensive than traditional protein sources.
  • A distinct texture and flavor may require modification for the consumer to accept it.
  • There could be some challenges in gaining acceptance due to unfamiliarity and uncertainty regarding safety.
