To explain it simply, you can take up a Post Basic BSc Nursing course only if you have completed the GNM course and are a registered nurse. However, you can take up BSc Nursing if you have passed Class 12th in Biology. Since students gain some work experience after becoming registered nurses, the average salary of PBBsc is higher. Otherwise, both of these degrees carry the same weightage and have the same scope.

Post Basic BSc Nursing Eligibility

As an Indian student, to be eligible for a Post Basic BSc Nursing undergraduate course, you have to fulfil the following requirements:

• 10+2 years of education with science (biology, chemistry and physics) as the primary subjects
• Minimum cutoff in the common entrance exams (NEET) or university-specific entrance exams (JIPMER and IGNOU OPENNET) 
• Completed a GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) course before applying for the Post Basic BSc Nursing 
• If not GNM, any diploma or certificate course in nursing of 6 to 9 months
• Registered as a Nurse under any of the State Nursing Registration Councils

This course may appear to be a good substitute for a BSc in Nursing but the rigid entry requirements make it a tough nut to crack.

To be eligible for this course, you have to first complete your GNM course which is 3.5 years long. 

• Register as a Nurse

If you wish to pursue a Post Basic Nursing from India or abroad, you will need to be registered as a nurse with any of the Nursing Councils in India.

• Method of Admission

While some medical colleges in India accept students for this nursing course on merit, most ask the applicants to submit their university-specific aptitude test scores. For example, you have to give the IGNOU OPENNET for admission to the Indira Gandhi National Open University.
