Which Round is the Best?

Apart from MBA application deadlines, the question regarding MBA application round is a very common question amongst the students. Everyone wonders which round of application they should apply in. Well, there’s no one answer to that and it completely depends on your background, scores and your application readiness.  Let’s understand about each of these rounds in a bit more depth:

First Round

The application submission rate in the first round is comparatively less to the other rounds, thus making it a little less competitive. Applying in the first round demonstrates confidence to the business schools and shows that you have been planning this out for a long time and wish to make a strong bid for consideration. Generally, the acceptance rate is highest in the first round. However, this does not mean that you have to apply in this round at any cost even if your application is not ready. So, if you have a bit of a weak GMAT score but are ready with your application, you should consider applying in this round.

Second Round

Many people feel wrong about applying to the second round and think the chances are low in the second round. Though the competition is definitely higher in this round, it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to get selected in this round. The only hard thing about the second round is there is a larger pool of applications with fewer acceptances remaining. But, if you have a solid GMAT score, then it shouldn’t bother you. You can actually leverage the extra time provided to you by applying in the second round to work on your application. If you feel that you are not prepared with your application and not confident enough for the first round, then you should take some time and apply in the second round.

Third Round

The third round is usually the last round in most of the colleges. There are a lot less acceptances remaining by this round and it is really difficult to get admission in this round. Unless you have a stellar background profile and GMAT scores, it’s hard to get admitted in this round. By this point, the only chance of selection is if you bring something really diverse to the table which the university is looking for. So, it’s really a risky idea to apply in this round even if you have a good GMAT score and should prefer to apply in any of the first two rounds.

Fourth Round

As noticed in the above table, there are only a few business schools with a fourth-round for applications. The acceptance rate is almost negligible in the fourth round and it is always discouraged to apply in this round as many schools don’t even have the fourth round. So, unless you couldn’t apply in the first three rounds due to some emergency or any other reason, you should never even think of applying in the fourth round.

Other Factors Affecting this Decision

  • Target Business School- Your target business school plays a major role in affecting this decision. If you are applying in one of the top business schools, then it’s always better to apply early as the acceptance rate keeps on decreasing during later rounds because of the robust competition.
  • International Applicants- International students are usually advised to apply during the first two rounds as they require more time for completing visa processing and other formalities as well. Many business schools don’t even allow international applicants to apply after the second round.
