Important Dates for Law Entrance Exams

Law Entrance Exams in India

LLB and LLM are amongst the most pursued Law degrees in India for which various universities conduct their own competitive exams to screen suitable candidates. Let’s take a look at some of the major law entrance exams organised in India:

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)

The CLAT is a national level exam conducted at over 20 national universities and more than 50 private colleges for students who wish to pursue law. The exam goes on for 2 hours and is conducted annually. The exam is taken by more than 50,000 students all over India. Important changes that have been made for CLAT 2021 are:

  • The exam will be conducted as a computer-based test in selected and limited centres.
  • Instead of May, this year the CLAT will be held on 13th July 2021.
  • The total questions for UG: 120, and PG: 102.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT) India

LSAT is an international level exam for the students wanting to acquire admission under law courses offered by the prestigious law schools in the country. The exam is conducted on a quarterly basis by the Pearson VUE on behalf of the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). This test is organized separately for LLB and LLM courses. The mode of the exam remains to be offline and tests students on several parameters like logical reasoning, analytical reasoning and reading comprehension. 

The test goes on for a duration of 2 h 20 mins and will commence from 10 May 2021. The LSAT score is accepted in over 200 colleges globally including countries like India, United States, Canada, Australia, etc.

All India Law Entrance Test (AILET)

Being one of the most prominent law entrance exams, AILET is a national level examination conducted for the students applying for varied law degrees such as BBA LLB, LLM, PhD, etc. It is an offline exam which is conducted by the National Law University, Delhi once every year. It aims to test the law aspirants on several parameters set into 5 sections like basic mathematics, logical reasoning, legal aptitude etc.


Organized by the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprasth University,  IPU CET is the national entry-level examination. The university offers admissions under 5 courses like BA LLB, BBA LLB, etc. This is a pen-paper test and through this exam, candidates can get admissions under any one of the 8 colleges affiliated with the university. There will be objective type questions in the exam testing students about reasoning, legal aptitude, general knowledge, and English language & comprehension.  

Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (MH CET)

The MHCET Law is a state-level exam conducted by the Directorate of Higher Education, Maharashtra. The test boards shortlist various applicants for a 5-year law course and a 3-year law course in more than 120 colleges. The test is conducted annually and goes on for a duration of 2 hours. The exam will be conducted in the second week of March.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU UET)

The BHU UET is a university-level exam held annually. The test goes on for a duration of 2 hours and is conducted in both ways- the computer-based test and paper-based test. The test is said to be held in the month of April 2021 for many undergraduate courses including law. 

UPES Law Studies Aptitude Test (ULSAT)

The ULSAT is a university level test conducted by UPES, Dehradun. The test is conducted through offline and online modes and is accepted in 2 colleges. This year, the application deadline for ULSAT is April 2021 and the exams shall be held in Mid- March 2021.

Christ University Bangalore

The  Christ University Law Entrance Exam (CULEE) is a university-level entrance exam held annually. Students who wish to study law at christ university can enrol for this exam with the deadline for application is  May 31, 2021. The exam will be held in April and will be a paper-based test in centres located in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Kolkata.

Since degrees in law can vary from one country to another, international law schools and academic institutions have their own entrance exams for those wanting to study this field abroad. Below we have elaborated some of the law entrance exams organized on the global level that you must know about.

Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT)

The LSAT is an international level entrance exam for those aspiring to study at the prestigious law universities in the US, Canada and some select countries abroad. Conducted by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), it is held 6 times a year in the months of January, March, June, September, November and July. It is one of the prominent law entrance exams across the globe and is designed to check the critical thinking abilities of candidates wanting to pursue a law degree. The exam has 6 sections namely reading comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical reasoning etc.

Cambridge Law Test (CLT)

Cambridge Law Test is a pen and paper test designed to evaluate the comprehension and aptitude skills of candidates. It is conducted by the Cambridge Law Faculty University and comprises problem questions, essay questions, comprehension questions. The duration of the test is one hour and students are marked in score bracket of 1-10 in which 10 is considered to be exceptional. 

Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT)

Named as one of the best globally recognized law entrance exams, Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT) is a mandatory test one needs to qualify in order to apply to esteemed universities abroad. Comprising objective-type questions, it is a computer-based test is organized by LNAT Consortium and strives to gauge the skills of students through three sections like Interpretation Information, Verbal Ability, Deductive Reasoning, amongst others. Moreover, candidates are given a specific time limit to solve each section of the exam.
