Why more and more people are buying branded clothes and luxury items these days?

Question appeared in IELTS exam held on 26th November 2022 in the Evening Slot.

Q- More and more people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons for this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

A- People in the present period like to buy clothing, automobiles, and other products from well-known labels. The legitimacy of well-known companies and people’s desire to flaunt their status are the main factors that could explain this tendency. Personally, I believe that this is a generally lousy development because it contributes to the widening gap between the rich and the poor.

There are two primary explanations for why individuals choose to purchase goods from well-known companies. First, compared to smaller businesses, well-known brands provide goods of higher quality. In addition, it is clear that numerous fake goods are offered for sale at reduced costs and are solely intended for temporary use by consumers. In contrast, while those from well-known brands may cost more, they are reliable and provide users with a sense of satisfaction. Second, many today like to flaunt their riches or social status. Luxury automobiles from manufacturers like Porsche and Mercedes serve as a prime illustration of this. Due to their materials and distinctive qualities, these are frequently very expensive. As a result, they are viewed as a tool for the wealthy.

From my vantage point, it is appropriate to state that this trend has a detrimental effect on the advancement of society because it may result in a number of societal issues involving the rich and the poor. Poor people frequently lack lucrative employment opportunities, making it incredibly difficult for them to make ends meet and afford luxury goods. Contrarily, those who are wealthy are able to not only provide for their basic needs but also acquire luxury items that can make them happy. There may be tension and disputes in society as a consequence of this disparity between the wealthy and the poor.

In conclusion, buying products from well-known brands is increasingly common because they are high-quality and allow consumers to flaunt their riches. But this would seriously jeopardize societal stability and safety.
