Career options after BBA

As a career mentor with several years of mentoring in international universities, I am always on the lookout for blog topics that either cover a unique career or reach out to a wide number of students because they are in that situation.BBA is one of the most popular undergraduate degree programs which Indian students are currently opting for! Many students believe that doing a BBA provides a more structured path toward employability. Many believe that BBA has better prospects than an undergraduate program in the Social Sciences or Humanities. I do not believe that this is always the case However, BBA is indeed a flexible degree that prepares you for a broad range of opportunities. Hence, in this blog I am reaching out to all of you who are BBA students,  have finished a BBA degree or are considering doing this program.  I will discuss career opportunities as well as, advanced study programs after the undergraduate BBA course.

What Should I do During my BBA to Improve my Career Prospects?

If you are a BBA student now or have a friend who is doing that program try to do the following:

  • Adding some certifications is always a plus. Online courses will do. Find courses related to business, marketing, HR, product design, data or anything related to your BBA syllabus. In short, learn some extra and upskill yourself.
  • Doing internships while you are doing BBA is essential. Internships add additional layers to your credentials. At the end of the BBA, your resume will not only show your college qualifications but also contain a few lines about the additional work-related experience that you have gained during your undergraduate program.

Is it Better to do a Master’s Degree / MBA After BBA or Take Up a Job?

Today, a basic undergraduate degree does not bring high-paying employability we all know that! So, after BBA there are two main choices :

  • Get an entry-level job and gain work experience before applying for a master’ program.
  • Head straightaway for the Post-grad program whether in India or as a study abroad student, choosing a Master’s in business, marketing or any other related subject.

Anyone who has been tracking enrollments and acceptance rated to the best institutions (which lead to high job placements) would know that work experience is highly regarded by B-schools. Applications to the top B-schools contain questions which relate to experience and students who have no job-related (or entrepreneurial ) experience are at a disadvantage compared to those who can showcase their exposure to problem-solving and decision-making. In short, your choice would depend on your circumstances and the finances you have planned for your education.
