History, Affiliations and Rankings

The University of Queensland was established through a 1909 Act of State Parliament and was formally inaugurated on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of appointments to the first UQ Senate. Teaching began in 1911 in Brisbane's Old Government House on George Street. The University is affiliated with Group of Eight, Universitas 21, Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL), EdX and McDonnell International Scholars Academy. The University of Queensland's research performance is highlighted in the most recent worldwide university rankings. UQ is ranked in the top 50 and top 100 universities in the world by the most renowned and well-recognised rankings. The QS Top University Rankings 2022 and THE World University Rankings 2022 place UQ at #47 and #54 in the world and #5 and #3 in Australia respectively. Furthermore, the university is also being ranked by the US News Best Global Universities Rankings, which places UQ at #36 in the world. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

In Australia, UQ has three campuses namely St. Lucia, Gatton and Herston, located in Queensland. The largest research library in Queensland, hundreds of high-quality study spaces, several museums, a theatre, 11 college residences, and magnificent sporting facilities such as swimming pools, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, sports fields, Olympic-standard running tracks, and gymnasiums are just some of the highlights of the UQ campus. The university is renowned worldwide to offer around 390 undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a plethora of fields of study. More than 15,400 PhDs are among UQ's 280,000 graduates, who form an engaged worldwide network spanning more than 170 nations. The 2021 NTU Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities places UQ at #4 for Environment and Ecology and #2 for Agriculture. The University is honoured with 9 national awards and citations from the Australian Awards for University Teaching, 5 UQ Excellence in Learning & Teaching Awards and 44 fellowships/scholarships to the Higher Education Academy. The research and teaching achievements contribute to UQ’s consistently high ranking as one of the world’s top 50 world universities. Some of the notable names are Quentin Bryce, former Governor-General of Australia, Peter Beattie, former Premier of Queensland and Geoffrey Rush, Australian actor.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

Students from all around the world are welcomed at the University of Queensland. More than 55,300 current students study across UQ's three campuses in South East Queensland, including the majority of Queensland's greatest academic achievers, more than 19,900 postgraduates, and nearly 20,200 foreign students from 142 countries. The institution has 3,513 faculty and staff members, 1,376 of whom are domestic and 2,137 of them are international workers. UQ is home to people from more than 200 nationalities, who speak 220 languages. Clubs and organisations are an important part of student life at UQ, bringing together a diverse range of people and providing opportunities for incoming freshmen. There are almost 200 student clubs that help students broaden their horizons. Furthermore, the University of Queensland has climbed another place in the 2022 QS Graduate Employability Rankings, to be number #=63 in the world.
