History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1905 by Ma Xiangho, Fudan University was formerly known as Fudan Public School situated in Shanghai, China. In 1911, the institute was used as the headquarters of the Guangfu Army and was not opened for a year. In 1917, the institute was changed to a private university. In 1941, after the invasion of China, the Government of China changed the University again to a Public institute. The Fudan University has academic affiliations with C9, Universitas 21, Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU), the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), BRICS Universities League, Council on Business & Society, and Washington University in St. Louis McDonnell International Scholars Academy. Fudan University ranks #34 in World University Rankings by QS and #60 in World University Rankings 2022 by Times Higher Education. Fudan University has consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by some of the world's most widely read university rankings, including the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the QS World University Rankings, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Fudan University has four campuses - Handan, Fenglin, Zhangjiang, and Jiangwan campus. The Handan campus is the main campus, which consists of all the main faculties and departments. The Fenglin campus is the medical centre of the institute, located in the Xuhui District. Fudan University has 17 full-time schools, 69 departments, 73 bachelor's degree programmes, 22 disciplines and 134 sub-disciplines authorised to confer PhD degrees, 201 master's degree programmes, 6 professional degree programmes, 7 Ministry of Education P.R.C. key social science research centres, 9 national basic science research and training institutes, and 25 post-doctoral research stations. It has 40 national core disciplines granted by the Ministry of Education, ranking third in the country. It has 77 research institutes, 112 cross-disciplinary research institutes, and 5 national key laboratories at the moment. The Zhanjiang campus in the Pudong district contains the faculties of Microelectronics, Computer Science and Technology, Software, and Pharmacy. Fudan University offers Bachelor’s, Master's, and Ph.D. programs with specializations in Management, Medical Sciences, Computer Science, Media and Communications, Public Policy, and Finance.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

In 2000, Fudan University after collaborating with Shanghai Medical University, the institute became a known research-oriented institute both in China and abroad for its Arts, Sciences, and Medicine. The institute is among the top institutions in Asia and has affiliations with 17 hospitals. Fudan University has about 95 academicians alumni. They have over 60 alumni employed as professors in the top 15 universities in America and the United Kingdom. The notable alumni of Fudan University are Wang Huning a leading Chinese political theorist, Han Zheng a Chinese politician serving as the Senior Vice Premier of the State Council, Li Yuanchao a retired Chinese politician, the Vice President of the People's Republic of China from 2013 to 2018, Kim Young-dae is a South Korean actor, and Ding Xuexiang is a Chinese politician who serves as an important political aide of Xi Jinping, current General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

Fudan University has about 36,000 students on-campus out of which 13,600 are undergraduates, and 22,600 postgraduates with 3,000 professors and faculty. There are more than 3,600 international students at the institute. Fudan University’s male-to-female ratio is 48:52. In addition, the university has almost 1,760 international students, placing it second in the country. Fudan University has a high-level research faculty of over 2,600 full-time teachers and researchers, including 1,350 professors and associate professors, 47 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nearly 660 doctoral supervisors, 26 special professors and 2 lecture professors of the "Cheungkong Scholars Program," 3 distinguished professors and 10 special professors of Fudan University, 6 principal scientists of Project 973, and 3 distinguished professors and 10 special professors of Fudan University The visiting companies at the institute are Amazon, Deloitte, Bain & Company, and others.
