About BTech
Bachelor of Technology or BTech is a three or four-year professional undergraduate course which is a gateway for students to pursue a career in engineering. Offering different specializations under the domain such as BTech Biotechnology, BTech Food Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, etc, the bachelor’s program is one of the most sought-after courses when it comes to pursuing a successful career in Science after 12th.
Difference Between BE and BTech
Though both of the degrees prepare students for starting a career in engineering, there is a minor difference between BE and BTech when it comes to the material of the course and program orientation. Tabulated below are the key differences between these two-degree programs:
BTech | BE/BEng |
---|---|
This program mainly deals with the technical aspect of the sciences or is more practical in nature. | BE goes more towards the theoretical aspect of the sciences. |
It concentrates on the application of engineering principles and thus is primarily skills-oriented. | .BE focuses on inventing new things based on theoretical knowledge. |
Internships are mandatory requirements when it comes to studying Bachelor of Technology. | In this, internships or industrial visits may not be necessary. |
The curriculum of the BTech course is updated frequently because it is mainly technology-oriented | The curriculum or coursework of BEng is not updated as frequently as BTech |
Top Universities offering BTech Courses
With better facilities in education provided through world-class infrastructure, highly-qualified faculty, and better learning tools, listed below are some of the famous universities offering BTech courses. These program parts form imparting quality education also render the necessary learning and practical training to the students:

BTech: Eligibility Criteria
Every university offering a BTech degree program calls for those students who possess sound knowledge in the science stream subjects. Though different universities have their own conditions, listed below are some general parameters for seeking admission into Bachelor of Technology programs:
- The candidates must complete their 10+2 level of secondary education with either MPC subjects or BiPC subjects(with Mathematics) with a minimum aggregate percentage set by the university chosen.
- It is a must for the candidates to pass certain aptitude exams before heading for admission into BTech courses like SAT, ACT, etc.
- For studying BTech in abroad universities, the candidates are required to show their language proficiency by scoring well in IELTS, TOEFL or PTE exams.
- Apart from the abovementioned requirements, the applicants also need to submit an SOP (Statement of Purpose), LORs (Letter of Recommendation), mark sheets, etc.
Note: SAT or Scholastic Assessment Test is an exam used to evaluate the verbal, written and mathematical ability of the candidate through objective questions. The score of which is accepted by a majority of universities for granting admission to various undergraduate programs. On the other hand, ACT (American College Testing) is an exam that is taken by the students who wish to enrol for undergraduate programs in the universities located in the USA and Canada. It measures the mathematical, scientific and reading knowledge of the candidates.
B. Tech Admission Process
The B.Tech admissions procedure is as follows:
- Engineering entrance examinations are used to determine admission to B.Tech degrees. JEE Mains and JEE Advanced are used to determine admission to centrally supported institutes.
- Other regional/state entrance tests are used to determine admission to state colleges.
- VITEEE, BITSAT, and SRMJEE are some of the private institutions’ own admission tests.
B. Tech Specializations
BTech provides the students with a plethora of specializations and courses to choose from and pursue their careers in. While many prospective candidates are clear about what area they want to specialize in, for some, it can a daunting task. Here is a list of some of the most popular engineering branches that you can consider:
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest specializations that deals with conceptualizing, designing, constructing, and operating machinery. The candidates having sound knowledge in mathematics and physics, who can multi-task and use their creativity with logical skills, together make an exceptional mechanical engineers. Pursuing a BTech in Mechanical Engineering opens the door to a number of career opportunities in industries like automobile, aerospace, chemical, railways, research and development firms, thermal plants, armed forces, air conditioning and refrigeration industries to name a few.
Computer Science Engineering
An amalgamation of the field of engineering with computer science, this engineering degree program puts a greater emphasis on imparting knowledge pertaining to the fundamentals of networking and computer programming. The students are taught various topics like program designing, programming languages, computer software, algorithms, computer hardware, database, Data Structures, etc. One of the high salary courses after 12th science, a graduate in BTech Computer Science Engineering can work in various job profiles such as software developer, software engineer, system database administrator, system designer, research analyst, computer programmer, academician, data warehouse analyst, etc.
Aerospace Engineering
Counted amongst one of the toughest BTech specializations, aerospace engineering is a field that encompasses the elements of both aeronautical and astronautical engineering, along with that of mechanical engineering. Dealing with designing and maintenance of space and air crafts, this field provides an array of career opportunities to students by acquainting them with knowledge of mathematics, physics, robotics, electricity, aeronautics, drafting, computer applications, etc. The major roles and responsibilities that a graduate in Aerospace engineering from the best aerospace engineering colleges performs include developing newer technologies in aviation, defence systems, and space crafts, examining any malfunction or damage in systems and equipment, manufacturing individual components and aircraft, determining the safety norms and whether the engineering principles are followed, etc.
