Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships

By the specified agency deadline, applicants must complete an application available through NSERC’s online portal. The application is submitted to NSERC directly. The application process has no institutional adjudication or administrative involvement. 

Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Postdoctoral Fellowships

The CIHR Fellowship competition is usually held in July of each year. Stipend levels and maximum duration are determined by the candidates’ backgrounds; PhD trainees may get up to $40,000 per year for up to three years (plus benefits), while licensed health professionals may receive up to $50,000 per year for up to five years (plus benefits).

By the announced agency deadline, applicants must complete an application available through SSHRC’s online system. SSHRC receives the application directly. 

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

This fellowship, worth $70,000 per year for two years, is the most prestigious and competitive of all Canadian tri-agency postdoctoral opportunities, with just 70 available across Canada each year. Interested applicants must apply through and be approved by the institution where they intend to hold the fellowship. This fellowship’s yearly competition usually begins in April. The Banting competition applicants are not automatically considered for other agency-specific fellowships. If qualified, applicants who desire to apply for both the Banting and other agency-specific funding opportunities must do so individually.

Caivan Communities Postdoctoral Fellowship

Caivan Communities will make postdoctoral fellowship opportunities available beginning in 2021 and continuing until 2023. These fellowships, which typically last two years, will be valued at $60,000 each year, with the option of an additional $3,000 to fund research-related expenses. Lupina Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 

These prestigious postdoctoral opportunities were established in 2021 thanks to a contribution from the Lupina Foundation. Two fellowships will be offered each year, each at $70,000 per year for two years, with a $5000 research stipend. There are both internal and external funding models accessible.

Applications from outstanding early-career academics studying the social determinants of health, particularly at the intersections of health, society, and technology, are invited. Lupina postdoctoral fellows will be supervised by any academic member in the Academic of Arts at Waterloo, with the possibility of multidisciplinary collaboration across the University.
