Full form of RO

The full form of RO is Reverse Osmosis. In the reverse osmosis filtration method, all impurities and large molecules are removed while only clean water may flow through a semipermeable porous membrane. RO technology is used in the vast majority of portable water production devices.

Working Principle of RO

The osmosis concept is reversed in the reverse osmosis process. Pressure is applied to the salt solution as it is pushed up against the semipermeable membrane. In this instance, the applied pressure exceeds the osmotic pressure. In other words, the molecules are transitioning from a highly concentrated solution to a less concentrated solution.

Difference Between Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis

Even while water molecules are moving throughout both processes, they are substantially different from one another. Let’s take a closer look at the key differences:

  • Water molecules travel across a semi-permeable membrane during osmosis, a kind of diffusion, from a region with a high water potential to one with a lower one. The process of reverse osmosis, on the other hand, includes the movement of water molecules against the gradient of concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.
  • There is no energy needed for osmosis. Reverse osmosis does, however, need a substantial quantity of energy.
  • Natural osmosis takes place. However, reverse osmosis has a wide range of professional applications.
