Full form of RO

The full form of RO is Reverse Osmosis. It is a popular water treatment process in which all impurities and large molecules are removed by passing water through a semipermeable porous membrane. Interestingly, the membrane only allows clean water while only clean water to flow through while leaving impurities and contaminants behind. Today, the RO technology is used in the vast majority of portable water production devices. It is suitable for both domestic and industrial applications.

Working Principle of RO

The osmosis concept is reversed in the reverse osmosis process. Pressure is applied to the salt solution as it is pushed up against the semipermeable membrane. In this instance, the applied pressure exceeds the osmotic pressure. In other words, the molecules are transitioning from a highly concentrated solution to a less concentrated solution.

Advantages of RO

Here is a list of the advantages of RO:

  • RO removes contaminants from water and provides safe and clean water for drinking.
  • RO systems are energy-efficient as compared to many other water purification methods.
  • It is a reliable and efficient method of water purification.

Disadvantages of RO

  • RO systems are expensive to install.
  • They need period maintenance for efficient and smooth functioning.
  • Some RO systems can also remove essential minerals from water.
  • RO systems lead to a significant amount of water waste.

Difference Between Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis

Here are the key differences between Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis

Feature Osmosis Reverse Osmosis
Definition Osmosis refers to the movement of molecules from the region of lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration. Reverse osmosis is the process of forcing a solvent through a membrane to remove impurities, resulting in purified water.
Direction of movement The solvent moves from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration. The solvent moves from high solute concentration to low solute concentration.
