What is the Full Form of DIG?

DIG full form is Deputy Inspector General of Police in its complete form. It is a three-star position in the Indian Police Service (DCP) that comes before the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) or Deputy Commissioner of Police. The Inspector General of Police (IG) or Joint Commissioner of Police is in charge of the employee in this position. An IPS officer wearing a uniform with three stars performs tasks from this office.

How to Apply for DIG?

For candidates who want to become DIGs, the UPSC Civil Services Exam is the initial requirement. After passing the test, the candidate is appointed as an IPS officer and undergoes the necessary training. After completing the curriculum, the IPS officer is assigned as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Based on experience, performance, and track record, he or she is then promoted to the post of Superintendent of Police (SP), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), and lastly Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

Eligibility Criteria for a DIG

There are two major criteria considered for the rank of DIG, given below:-

1. Priority is given to people who are permanently settled in India. However, people from Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibet are also eligible to crack the examination.
2. UPSC Examination is a must for the candidate. Moreover, they should also have a bachelor’s degree from a renowned university.

Salary of a DIG

A person working on the post of DIG is taxed based on the Senior Time Scale of the PayScale. This comes under the IPS Pay Rules 2016 that was published in the Government Gazette (pay level 11). As per the Junior time scale, the base pay of a DIG ranges from INR 37,000 to 68,000 per month. Moreover, the grade pay is Rs.8060. The base pay of Deputy Superintendent of Police is INR 56,100 (pay level 10). These pay scales are regularly evaluated by the Central Government.
