The full form of CPT is “Common Proficiency Test,” which was an entry-level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for individuals aspiring to become chartered accountants. It was the first level of the CA course and consisted of four subjects: Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics, and Quantitative Aptitude. The CPT exam was conducted twice a year and was a pen-and-paper-based test.

However, the CPT has been replaced by the CA Foundation course since July 2017. The new CA Foundation course has a revised syllabus and examination pattern, and the examination is conducted in a computer-based mode. The CA Foundation exam tests the student’s knowledge and understanding of the principles and concepts of accounting, business laws, economics, and quantitative techniques.

Eligibility Requirements for CPT

The eligibility requirements for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT), which was the entry-level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for individuals aspiring to become chartered accountants, were as follows:

  1. Educational Qualification: The candidate must have passed Class 10th or its equivalent from a recognized board.
  2. Registration: The candidate must have registered with the ICAI for the CPT course at least 60 days prior to the date of examination.
  3. Age: There was no age limit to appear for the CPT exam.
  4. Compliance Test: The candidate must have completed the required period of study (usually 60 days) before appearing for the CPT exam and must have undergone a compulsory 100 hours of Information Technology Training (ITT) before or after registering for the CPT exam.

The exam was conducted in two sessions, with a break of two hours between the sessions. The CPT exam had objective-type questions, and each question had four options, out of which the candidate had to select one correct option.

The passing marks for the CPT exam were 30% in each subject and 50% in aggregate in all subjects. Candidates who passed the CPT exam were eligible to register for the Intermediate (Integrated Professional Competence) Course.
