What is CIDR?

CIDR is a concept that was introduced in the early 1990s to overcome the limitations of the existing IP addressing system. Before CIDR, IP addresses were allocated based on fixed classes known as Class A, Class B and Class C addresses. However, this fixed class structure led to inefficient utilization of IP addresses.

CIDR also referred to as supernetting and addresses this inefficiency issue by allowing for more flexible allocation of IP addresses. It allows network administrators to divide IP address space into smaller and more manageable blocks, rather than adhering to rigid class boundaries.

How Does CIDR Work?

CIDR works by using a combination of IP address and subnet mask to determine the range of IP addresses that belong to a specific network. The subnet mask is a binary pattern that helps in distinguishing between the network portion and the host portion of an IP address.
