Rashbehari Bose is given the credit as the founder of Azad Hind Fauj. Also known as the Indian National Army (INA), was a revolutionary armed force formed during World War II with the aim of liberating India from British colonial rule. Led by visionary leaders, the formation of Azad Hind Fauj marked the beginning of a revolution during the struggle for India’s independence. Let’s get to know who founded Azad Hind Fauj together.
Another significant freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was a prominent leader in the Indian independence movement and had a vision of creating a powerful army to fight against British imperialism. In 1942, during World War II, he established the Azad Hind Fauj with the aim of liberating India.
The Formation and Growth of Azad Hind Fauj
On the backdrop of the Second World War, Captain General was taken as a prisoner in Japan. The Japanese Army officers influenced him to work in collaboration with them in the mission to free India.
- The INA (Indian National Army) was earlier formed as a little army by Captain General Mohan Singh.
- The revival of the army happened through the efforts of Rashbehari Bose. He was also responsible for creating the Ghadar Party in the year 1913.
Subhash Chandra Bose was invited by Rashbehari Bose to take charge of the army he was creating. Thus, Azad Hind Fauj was officially formed on October 21, 1943, in Singapore, with Subhas Chandra Bose assuming the role of Supreme Commander.
- The INA attracted a diverse group of volunteers, including Indian expatriates, prisoners of war, and civilians, who were inspired by Bose’s vision of a liberated India.
- The Azad Hind Fauj was formed in collaboration with the Japanese forces, who provided support to Bose in raising an army to fight against the British.

Battle Cry of Azad Hind Fauj: “Dilli Chalo!”
The iconic slogan “Dilli Chalo!” reverberated throughout the ranks of Azad Hind Fauj, symbolizing the soldiers’ unwavering determination to march towards Delhi and free the capital from colonial oppression. This battle cry became a rallying call for the INA fighters as they embarked on their struggle for independence.
