Rutgers University, formerly known as the State University of New Jersey, was established in 1766 and is the state’s primary public research university. It is the eighth-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It was once known as Queen’s College before being renamed Rutgers College in 1825 in honour of Colonel Henry Rutgers. After being designated as the State University of New Jersey by the New Jersey Legislature, it was transformed into a research university from a liberal arts institution.

Campus and Colleges

Rutgers University features a big campus in New Brunswick as well as smaller campuses in Newark and Camden. The original Rutgers College, which was formerly a men’s college but became coeducational in 1972; Douglass College (1918), which was founded as a liberal arts college for women; Cook College (1921), which offers agricultural and environmental science programs; and Livingston College (1969), a coeducational liberal arts college, are all located on the New Brunswick campus. A graduate school for the liberal arts, engineering and pharmacy colleges, and schools or graduate schools of education, business, and the arts are also located in New Brunswick. A college of arts and sciences, a graduate school, and a few additional schools are located on the Newark and Camden campuses, respectively. It also houses Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences’ health and medical care branch. The Camden campus, in southern New Jersey, and the Newark campus, in northern New Jersey, are both leading higher education institutions.
