What Happened in India on June 23?

1757 – Battle of Plassey
The Battle of Plassey was a decisive victory of the British East India Company over a much larger force of the Nawab of Bengal and his French allies on 23 June 1757, under the leadership of Robert Clive. The battle helped the Company seize control of Bengal.

2013-India defeats England A
It was on June 23, 2013, when India defeated England to win the Champions Trophy. The match was slated to be a 50-over contest, but rain curtailed the affair to 20 overs per side. In the match between both sides, England won the toss and opted to bowl first.

2018-Indian chess prodigy 
On 23 June 2018, Ramesh babu praggnanandhaa achieved his third and final norm at the Grenadine Open in Urtijëi, Italy by defeating Luca Moroni in the eighth round to become, at the age of 12 years, 10 months, and 13 days, the then second-youngest person ever to achieve the rank of grandmaster.

1868- Christopher Latham Sholes patents the Sholes and Glidden typewriter
Christopher Latham Sholes was an American inventor who invented the QWERTY keyboard, and, along with Samuel W. Soule, Carlos Glidden, and John Pratt, has been contended to be one of the inventors of the first typewriter in the United States.

1888- Frederick Douglass as1st African-American to be nominated for US Vice President
Douglass became the first African-American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate and Vice Presidential nominee of Victoria Woodhull, on the Equal Rights Party ticket.

1960- 1st contraceptive pill made available for purchase in the USA
In 1960, Enovid (noretynodrel) was the first birth control pill to be approved by the FDA in the United States. The pill became very popular and had a major impact on society and culture.

1963- US open Men’s golf, The Country Club
Julius Boros won his second Open title in an 18-hole playoff with Arnold Palmer and Jacky Cupit. Julius Nicholas Boros was an American professional golfer noted for his effortless-looking swing and strong record on difficult golf courses, particularly in the U.S. Open.

2004- Bob Dylan accepts honorary doctorate of music degree
He received the award from the University of St Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university. Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter, author, and visual artist. Often regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture during a career spanning nearly 60 years.

2009- Akio Toyoda is confirmed as the new President of the Toyota Motor Corporation
He is the great-grandson of the Japanese industrialist Sakichi Toyoda and the grandson of both the founder of Toyota Motors Kiichiro Toyoda and the founder of the Takashimaya department stores corporation Shinshichi Iida.

2016- Brexit referendum: United Kingdom votes to leave the European Union
After the British EU membership referendum held on 23 June 2016, in which a majority voted to leave the European Union, the United Kingdom experienced political and economic upsets, with spillover effects across the rest of the European Union and the wider world.
