What Happened in India on June 26?

1914- The Indian Relief Act passed
The Indian Relief Act passes after a protracted period of Passive Resistance led by Gandhi; it abolishes a £3 tax imposed on Indians who had not renewed their indentures and recognizes the validity of Indian customary marriages.

1995- Declaration of the ‘Tiger State’
On June 26 in 1995, Madhya Pradesh was declared the “Tiger State of India” since the state was then home to one-sixth of the world’s tiger population. The population of the Bengal Tiger in India at the beginning of the 20th century was around 20,000-40,000.

1794- Battle of Fleurus
A major victory by the forces of the First French Republic under General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan over the Coalition Army of Great Britain, Hanover, Dutch Republic, and Habsburgs. And it was the first use of a reconnaissance balloon.

1857- Award of the victoria cross
The first 62 recipients were awarded the Victoria Cross for valor in the Crimean War by Queen Victoria. The Victoria Cross is the pre-eminent award for acts of bravery in wartime and Australia’s highest military honor. It is awarded to persons who, in the presence of the enemy, display the most conspicuous gallantry; a daring or pre-eminent act of valor or self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty.

1894- Patent for gasoline-driven auto
Karl Benz of Germany received a US patent for gasoline-driven auto. The Benz patent motor car is the world’s first automobile. Carl Benz designed it in 1885. He had the idea of a motorcar, designed it, built it, tested it, patented it, put it on the market, produced it in series, developed it further, and thus made his innovation usable.

1945- UN Charter signed
The Charter of the United Nations is the founding document of the United Nations. It was signed on 26 June 1945, in San Francisco, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945.

1968- Iwo Jima & Bonin Islands returned to Japan by the US
Iwo Jima is one of the Japanese Volcano Islands and lies south of the Bonin Islands. Together with other islands, they form the Ogasawara Archipelago. The US military occupied Iwo Jima until 26 June 1968, when it was returned to Japan.

1997- Harry Potter and series first book published
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the 1st book in J. K. Rowling’s best-selling series was published. The book was first published in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997 by Bloomsbury. It was published in the United States the following year by Scholastic Corporation under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It won most of the British book awards that were judged by children and other awards in the US.

2018- Polio outbreak in new guinea
It was confirmed that poliovirus was circulating once again in Papua New Guinea after 18 years of being polio-free. As polio is considered to be a highly infectious disease that transmits rapidly, there was a potential for the outbreak to spread to other children across the country, and even into neighboring countries.

1993- Ariana Grande
A famous American singer was born in Boca Raton, Florida on June 26, 1993.
