This polymath is another famous Indian mathematician who is world-renowned for his ingenious contribution to the fields of geometry and number system. His biggest contribution was his consideration of zero as a number which was a new concept for the ancient world of mathematics. He established all the rules and norms of using zero as a number. This pathbreaking revolution on his part resulted in the development of the present form of the number system of mathematics. He worked out the Brahmagupta’s theorem for cyclic quadrilaterals which was a major finding of his time.

An unrivaled teacher with immense knowledge, Aryabhata is a name to be reckoned with from ancient India. His expansive knowledge covered areas of Maths, Astronomy, and Science. He wrote a comprehensive treatise titled the “Aryabhatiya” which in its range covered various integral topics of mathematics like trigonometry and algebra. He was the first to give an approximation of the value of pi and drew various other deductions related to formulas in mathematics. Not only a doyen of maths, but BHaslara was also a revered astronomer who made significant discoveries in both the fields.  With the aim of making existence easier and more scientific, he went deep into the number system and ideated easy formulas related to squaring and multiplication of numbers. His work left a tremendous impact on how the number system evolved over time. A creator at heart, Bhaskara laid the foundation of mathematics in India by his consequential work.

Srinivasa Ramanujan

Ramanujan is one of the greatest mathematical geniuses of India who worked with elliptic functions and analytical theory of numbers. He conducted profound research to calculate the value of Euler’s constant. What is interesting to note is that Ramanujan was the first Indian to be elected as a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge University. There he continued his work in collaboration with other fellows and made several other contributions to the field of Mathematics. P.C. Mahalanobis

Father of Indian Statistics, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis is one of the most famous Indian mathematicians whose contribution to the field of Statistics is legendary. His contribution to statistics involves the introduction of the concept of pilot and large scale surveys. Moreover, the 2nd five-year plan, which focused on industrialization was based on the Mahalanobis model. Also referred to as the “Father of Indian Statistics”, it was P.C Mahalanobis who founded the Indian Institute of Statistical Science. For his unprecedented contributions to Statistics as a major branch of Maths, 29th June is celebrated as National Statistics Day in his honor!
