Born on 3 February 1963 in Madhya Pradesh, Raghuram Govind Rajan is an Indian Economist who has been vital in reshaping and upliftment of the Indian economy. Known as the ‘Rockstar’ and a ‘Prophet’ in the field of Economics, he predicted the US economic crisis of 2008 beforehand in 2005. He began his professional career as a teacher at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business where he was appointed as an Assistant Professor. He later travelled to Northwestern University as a visiting professor.

The year 2003 saw him rising as an economist when he was selected as a chief economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where he headed the departments of research and counselling. In the same year, He was awarded the ‘Fischer Black Prize‘ by the American Finance Association for his exceptional performance in the sphere of Finance. The commendable work and education of Raghuram Rajan paved his way to becoming 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. During his three year tenure as the Governor of RBI, he made a remarkable contribution to bringing back the ‘Rupee‘ from inflation. In 2008, Rajan was appointed as the honorary economic consultant to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Raghuram Rajan was an exceptional student right from his childhood. He completed his primary education from Delhi Public School, R.K Puram. To pursue his higher education, he went to Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, which is considered one of the best in the list of IITs where he completed his graduation in Electrical Engineering in 1985. He emerged as a topper in every institution he entered, which shows his quest for knowledge and his dedication towards his studies. In 1987, he completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the country’s prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad where he won a gold medal for his exceptional performance in the academics.

After achieving a great feat in his education, he chose to study abroad for his higher studies. He completed his PhD in Management from Sloan School of Management, one of the world’s leading business schools at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991. Besides having many awards to his credit, Raghuram Rajan was named in Time Magazine’s list of  ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’ in 2016. He also won the fifth ‘Deutsche Bank Prize for Financial Economics 2013 for his groundbreaking work in macroeconomic policies around the world. He has also authored two books which include ‘Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists’ and another being the ‘Fault Lines’ both of which are widely acclaimed. The Fault Lines won the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award in 2010. The education of Raghuram Rajan is vital to understand his achievements.
