The Canadian government made it compulsory for all travelers to provide COVID-19 related details through the ArriveCAN app. But, what is the ArriveCAN application, and how to use it for traveling to Canada?

What is the ArriveCAN Application?
The Canadian government is adopting a number of measures at the border to try to combat the spread of the virus in the country. ArriveCAN was established as a safe and easy-to-use tool to assist travelers in complying with certain border restrictions. It can be accessed with a mobile app or by logging in online. Travelers entering Canada by land, air, or sea must use ArriveCAN to provide mandatory information as needed by the Quarantine Act’s Emergency Orders.
Who Needs It?
Except for a few exceptions, all travelers entering Canada by air, land, or sea must use ArriveCAN.
- Your information must be submitted 72 hours prior to your arrival in Canada.
- If you’re traveling by marine vessel
- If you’re traveling by water, you’ll need to utilize ArriveCAN before or after you enter Canada to account for Wi-Fi issues on the sea.
Exception: If you’re flying from one country to another
- Passengers transiting through Canada on their way to another country (and not leaving the airport’s secure area) do not need to submit their information through ArriveCAN.
How does the ArriveCAN App Work?
- Incoming passengers must complete a Canada travel health form available on ArriveCAN. This is a simple process.
- The applicant will receive an email receipt after submitting the ArriveCAN form for Canada/
- Upon arrival in Canada, the receipt must be presented to a border services officer. ArriveCAN receipts can be presented in the following formats:
- Email form
- 1 paper copy
- Via the ArriveCAN
Arrivals must do daily self-assessments using ArriveCAN until their quarantine period is over. This is a simple survey asking if they are having any COVID-19 symptoms.
Travelers who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 will be able to upload proof of vaccination via ArriveCAN starting July 5, 2021. Depending on the circumstances, this might exempt them from quarantine, require them to remain in a hotel for three nights, and/or need them to be tested on the 8th day of arrival.
How do I submit my ArriveCAN Application?
The ArriveCAN form must be filled out within 72 hours of the traveler’s arrival in Canada. Before leaving, you must provide the following information:
- Arrival date
- Details on the points of entry and the flight
- The purpose for your visit
- Contact information
- Reference code for a 3-night stay at a government-approved hotel (air travelers only
- Details on the COVID-19 test (if applicable)
- Recent travel experiences (previous 14 days)
- Plan of quarantine
Travelers must utilize ArriveCAN to provide daily COVID-19 symptom self-assessments after arrival in Canada.

What if you don’t use ArriveCAN to submit your information?
If you don’t use ArriveCAN to submit your information, and If coming by air, you may be denied boarding, and if crossing the border by land or sea, you may be denied admission into Canada (if you are a foreign national traveling for discretionary purposes)
However, Foreign nationals eligible to enter Canada under another entry exemption (such as foreign employment, study, or compassionate grounds), as well as Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or anyone registered under the Indian Act, will not be denied boarding or entrance, but you:
- Will not be able to make use of the fully vaccinated traveler exemption
- May face further delays at the border due to questions about public health.
- Maybe imposed fines or enforcement actions could be taken immediately.
Can I use the ArriveCAN for someone else?
You can include several travelers in your ArriveCAN submission if you’re traveling with others. Adding more than one person to your submission:
As the primary traveler, you have the ability to provide trip information for yourself and for the following people:
- your common-law partner or spouse
- 18-year-old or younger children (or youngsters for whom you have legal guardianship)
- any other adult over the age of 18 for whom you are the legal guardian
2. Traveling in a group
In a single submission, you can enter information for up to 8 travelers, including yourself.
When to use this:
- You’ll all stay at the same address for the period of the quarantine or isolation, and
- You have their permission to collect and share this information.
3. Essential travels are exempt
If your trip is for one of the following reasons, you can save time by creating an exempt essential travel profile and filling out your information only once. For each entry into Canada, retain your receipt.
- Cross-border work (e.g., you regularly cross the border to work)
- Essential Services (e.g., you live in an integrated trans-border community)
- Support for medical and health-care services (e.g., health care practitioner, you received or will receive medical care, or you transport medical equipment or supplies)
- Transportation and trade (e.g., truck driver or crew member on any aircraft, shipping vessel, or train)
Note: If the border services officer determines you are not traveling for exempt essential travel or are traveling for non-essential reasons, you will just need to resubmit your information in ArriveCAN (e.g., discretionary travel).
You can submit your information at any time before your trip, and you are no longer obliged to include information such as your port of entry or arrival date and time. You are not allowed to submit on behalf of others.
4. Traveling with mixed vaccination status or citizenship
Other travelers who are not traveling for the same purpose or who are not completely vaccinated should not be included in a single submission unless they are:
- under the age of 18 or a dependent adult
- escorted by a fully vaccinated guardian
As an example,
- If you are a foreign national entering Canada for a limited period of time and traveling with a Canadian citizen, you must submit separate forms.
- If you’re traveling with a group of adult foreign nationals who have varying vaccination statuses, don’t include unvaccinated passengers (unless they’re dependent adults) in your submission. Because unvaccinated foreign citizens are not permitted to enter Canada for discretionary travel, you will not be given an ArriveCAN receipt.
If you’re not the one who’s traveling
If you are not a traveler, you can sign in online and enter travel details on behalf of individuals who may be unable to use ArriveCAN:
- You must complete ArriveCAN with all of the passenger’s information.
- You’ll then be able to print or email the receipt to the traveler.
- You must provide the receipt to the tourist so that he or she may show it to a Canadian border services officer when they arrive in the country. The traveler is responsible for ensuring that they meet all of the entrance requirements for Canada.
- The traveler will not be able to do their post-border reporting through ArriveCAN; instead, they will need to contact 1-833-641-0343 every day during their 14-day quarantine.
What If your travel plans change before you arrive in Canada?
You must start afresh and create a new submission if you need to change your information and have an ArriveCAN receipt. ArriveCAN will delete all of your prior data. The app is an essential requirement for all travelers and only certain people are exempted from providing information through this application.
