Eligibility Criteria

The Eligibility Criteria to apply for the IMB PhD Fellowship are given below:

• Students cannot nominate themselves; a doctoral faculty member must nominate them.
• Must be enrolled full-time in a PhD program during the grant year or forfeit the fellowship.
• They must have two years left in their program at the time of nomination to apply for the fellowship to the final year of study.
• They are not eligible for the program if they are from embargoed countries or attend institutions in embargoed countries.
• They are ineligible for this award if they are receiving a comparable fellowship, internship, or support from another company or institution (except academic scholarships) during the IBM PhD Fellowship funding period. 
• Must remain in the same program for the duration of the award — no transferring of departments or schools.

Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for the IBM PhD fellowship 2023 was 17th January 2023. The applications are now closed for this year.

The 2023 IBM PhD Fellowship spans the academic years 2023–2024 and starts in the 2023 autumn semester. In accordance with the arrangements negotiated between the awardee, the IBM mentor, and the faculty adviser, the linked internship may be a summer assignment in 2023 or 2024 or an on-site assignment throughout the academic year.

Selection Process

The awardees will be selected based on the following criteria:

• Potential for scientific brilliance. All grantees will be assigned an IBM mentor for the duration of their award and are highly encouraged to intern throughout their award year. All student visas must be in accordance with the rules of the internship.
• How well does the nominees’ research correspond with IBM’s emphasis areas?
• Academic standing, publications, and approval from faculty advisors and department chairs.
