To promote Natural Science-based courses through scholarships and grants, the Prathibha Scholarship Programme was introduced by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. This scholarship scheme assists meritorious students in their higher education in colleges and universities. It is granted to only those students who opt for basic or Natural Science courses for their bachelor’s degree. The Prathibha Scholarship Program is offered by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment under the “Students with Talent and Aptitude for Research in Science” or STARS Programme.

Important Dates
The scholarship is offered under the guidelines of the conducting body and is awarded to many meritorious students of Kerala every year. The scholarship acts as financial aid towards their higher education.

Scholarship Features
Students apply for the Prathibha Scholarship Program to get financial aid in pursuing higher education. Students studying in any college, university or institution in India can apply for this scholarship program. The various benefits of the scholarship are mentioned below.
- The selected students are given an amount of INR 12,000 in the first year.
- In the second year of their graduation, the candidates are awarded INR 18,000 and in the third year, they are given INR 24,000.
- Those who continued their scholarships in the master’s program are given INR 40,000 in the first year of their master’s or 4th year of integrated degrees.
- In the next year, the candidates are awarded 60,000 as assistance towards their educational expenses.
- The scholarship also provides opportunities to attend several science enrichment programs.
- They also provide Summer Internships at Research and Development institutes at the state and national levels institutions in Kerala.
- Eight students were selected for the summer program at IISER-Trivandrum. Eight of them are selected based on IISER-Trivandrum guidelines and stream. Two students from each specialisation category are selected for the program.
- There is a 50% reservation for girl candidates and a 10% reservation for the reserved categories.
- Each program is also given a weightage of seats to be allotted for the scholarship program. The students from Mathematical Science are allotted 30% of the seats, 40% are allotted to those in Physical Science discipline, and 30% to those in Life Sciences.
- Students who have 3 main courses are considered under all three categories and considered for the top-ranking one.
Scholarship Duration and Renewal
The scholarship is awarded to students for 3 years of their undergraduate degree. If continued, the Prathibha Scholarship Program is extended to 2 years of a master’s degree or extended in the case of integrated programs. The beneficiaries of the Prathibha Scholarship Program have to keep the following in consideration.
- The candidate has to submit a renewal application at the end of each academic year. The renewal of the scholarship is subject to approval and is not confirmed at the time of awarding the scholarship in the first year.
- For the students of the 2nd and 3rd years in graduation or integrated courses, it is essential to pass all the examinations in the previous years to apply for scholarship renewal. The candidate must at least secure an average of 60% marks in the examination to re-apply for the scholarship.
- The renewal application requires the submission of the previous year’s marks list and signed renewal data sheet.
- To avail of the scholarship in post-graduation or integrated post-graduation the candidate must pass all the examinations of the undergraduate degree with at least 75% marks.
- The documents to be submitted for revoking the scholarship in the years of post-graduation are a consolidated mark sheet of the undergraduate program and a signed renewal data sheet available on the official website of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.
Conditions for Scholarship Grant
The Scholarship is awarded to students under certain conditions, failing to which the organising body has every right to not assign or withdraw the benefits of the scholarship.
- The scholarship is offered to undergraduate students of Kerala only.
- The students pursuing Natural Science or any of the basic Science stream courses are eligible to apply under this scholarship program.
- The selection process is completely based on merit and the scores of various science subjects are considered for selection.
- The beneficiaries who manage to secure the scholarship benefits for all 3 years of graduation and pass their undergraduate degrees with at least 75% marks can continue the scholarship in their post-graduation as well.
- There should be no break in education for the continuation of the scholarship. In case of discontinuation of the course, the candidate has to inform the KSCSTE within 15 working days.
- A letter signed by the student and the head of the institute has to be submitted to KSCSTE while stating the cause of discontinuation.
Eligibility for the Scholarship
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship grant, the applicant has to fulfil the following points.
- The applicant must belong to Kerala.
- It is also mandatory that the applicant has cleared their Higher Secondary Education from Kerala.
- The candidate must have cleared the Higher Secondary Board Education with a total of at least 90% marks in all the subjects. It is also essential that the candidate’s percentage of marks in all Science subjects is equal to or more than 90%.
- For candidates from SC and ST categories, there is some relaxation in the percentage of required marks, i.e. they must score 80% marks. Their scores in all Science-based subjects should be not less than 80%.
- The candidate should have secured admission in an undergraduate (3 years), postgraduate (2 years) or integrated postgraduate program (5 years).
Application Process
The application for the Prathibha Scholarship Program is a two-step process that a candidate has to go through. The first step of the application process is registration with the second step being documentation.
Registration
- The applicant must visit the official website of KSCSTE and register as a new applicant before the deadline.
- The candidate should provide a valid phone number and email ID in the registration form. These contact details will be used to contact the applicant for an interview.
- A recent passport-size photograph also has to be attached to the application form.
- The other details required by the authorities are personal information like name, date of birth, and HSE roll number.
- The candidates are then sent an OTP on their registered mobile numbers to continue their applications.
