History and Establishment

The Central Reserve Police Force was formed on July 27, 1939, under the Crown Representative’s Police (CRP) Act. Initially, the force came into existence as the Crown Representative’s Police (CRP) which was later renamed as Central Reserve Police Force after the enactment of the CRPF Act in 1947. Their motto is Service and Loyalty. Currently, there are 246 total battalions and more than 3,00,000 personnel serving in the force.

Role and Responsibilities

The CRPF’s role is in maintaining law and order as well as counterinsurgency operations in different parts of the country. Let’s take a closer look at its main responsibilities:

  1. Internal Security: CRPF acts as a bulwark against internal threats, providing assistance to state police forces and tackling situations such as communal tensions, riots, or acts of terrorism.
  2. Counterinsurgency: The force has actively participated in counterinsurgency operations in affected areas, like in anti-naxal operations, working closely with local police and other security agencies.
  3. Law Enforcement: They assist in maintaining law and order during critical situations, protecting public property, and ensuring the safety of citizens. 
  4. VIP Security: CRPF is entrusted with the duty of providing security to VIPs and important government officials, ensuring their safety during official visits or events.
  5. Border Security: The force also contributes to the security of India’s borders, particularly in areas where regular armed forces are not deployed.
