History of IIT Bombay

Sir Ardeshir Dalal of the Viceroy’s Executive Council predicted that India’s future prosperity will be dependent on technology after WWII ended and before India gained independence. As a result, he envisioned institutes that would train such workers throughout the country. The Indian Institutes of Technology were established for the first time this year.

Dr Humayun Kabir was instrumental in the establishment of IITs. He urged West Bengal Chief Minister Dr B. C. Roy to work on Sir Ardeshir’s idea for an IIT. In 1945, Dr Kabir along with Sir Jogendra Singh of the Viceroy’s Executive Council (Department of Education, Health and Agriculture) set up a 22 member committee to prepare a proposal and made Sir Nalini Ranjan Sarkar the chairman. IIT Bombay Campus

The IIT Bombay campus is located in Powai, East Mumbai, between the Vihar and Powai lakes, and covers an area of around 550 acres. The campus is separated into building clusters. The main building, multiple departmental annexes, and auditoria make up the academic area. A passageway titled Infinite Corridor connects all department annexes. The majority of the hostels are located beyond the Convocation Hall.

The campus has an extensive green cover and is mainly undisturbed by the pollution of the rest of the city due to its closeness to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Panthers, leopards, and Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) crocodiles have been spotted along the shores of the Powai lake due to the campus’ proximity to the national park. They occasionally stray into the campus in search of food

There are two swimming pools, football, hockey, and cricket fields, as well as tennis, basketball, squash, and volleyball facilities within the institute. There is also a Students’ Activity Center (SAC) where students can participate in cultural and other extracurricular activities. Aside from these amenities, the campus is home to two high schools, one of which is a Kendriya Vidyalaya and the other is known as IIT Campus School.
