Application Overview
There are mainly two steps in the application process for the Gilman International Scholarship.
- Submit Application by Student Deadline– There are two things that are needed to complete the application for the Gilman International Scholarship- 4 Essays, namely the Statement of Purpose which is limited to seven thousand characters, the Building Mutual Understanding Essay which is limited to three thousand characters, the Follow-on Service Project Proposal which is limited to three thousand characters and the optional Critical Need language Award essay which is limited to two thousand characters. The other requirement is the official or unofficial transcripts.
- Financial Aid Certifying and Study Abroad Advisors must provide their Certification before the end of the advisor deadline– The applicant must ensure that both advisors have provided their certification before the end of the advisor’s deadline. Without the certification, applications are not considered.
Eligibility Criteria
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is awarded to one recipient only once. If rejected once, the applicant can re-apply if they are able to meet the eligibility requirements mentioned below-
- The applicant is a citizen of the United States
- An undergraduate student with a good standing from an accredited institution in the United States
- During the time of the application, the applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof of the fact that they are receiving the Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program
- Proof of acceptance is required prior to award reimbursement
- Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System. However, certain locations within these countries or areas may be designated within the Travel Advisory as either “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) locations, as such; students will not be allowed to travel to these specific locations.

- Approximately 1 in 4 students who apply for the Gilman International scholarship are selected to receive it. The acceptance rate is 25%.
- Students who received the Gilman International Scholarship have studied or interned in 106 countries.

How Competitive is it?

Community college students must complete the programme in a minimum of two weeks, while four-year students must complete it in a minimum of three weeks.
