Canada Announces $80M Scholarship

As UKRI increases stipend; Int’l PhD students overlooked amid cost of living crisis

Last week Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced an $80 million scholarship program for individuals in 24 developing countries. 

The Canadian Universities announced the goal of the new Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 program that targets “educate, train and empower” thousands of students coming from 24 developing countries to Canada.

The program was announced at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda. The initiative is a part of a $500m package for “key priorities” named food security, climate change and gender equality

The scholarship program will address inequality, the plan is to help and improve the lives of the individuals hence, the program is being funded by Global Affairs Canada which will focus on high-quality education and training opportunities. 

“This new program will empower thousands of people in dozens of countries through leadership training, mentorship and education,” said Denise Amyot, CICan president. “Canada’s colleges and institutions look forward to helping connect educational leaders from across the world to develop new tools and resources for the future,” she continued.

The Canadian Universities are looking forward to connecting with educational leaders across the world and reaching over 7,000 people with the program. They are expecting to benefit women, French-speaking and Small Island Developing States.

According to Paul Davidson, President of Universities Canada, the Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 program is planned to contribute to a sustainable future. The program will maximise partnerships between Canada’s network of 236 colleges and universities, including 62 French-speaking institutions.

The program also aims for training and education that focus on the areas that are mostly highlighted by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It includes STEM, climate change, administration, and health sciences. Some “tailor-made” are also included depending on the focus country. The students availing of the scholarship can choose and engage themselves among various courses that directly benefit their community.
