History, Affiliations and Rankings

Reverend Luther Rice, Obadiah B. Brown, Spencer H. Cone, and Enoch Reynolds (all Baptist pastors) set the wheels in motion for the District's first college in 1819. These men acquired the finances needed to buy land in the nation's capital, petitioned Congress for a charter, and began the process of forming a college. Columbian University was renamed The George Washington University by Congress in 1904. University President Charles H. Stockton provided leadership, reforming the university in 1911 to cut costs and generate revenue by selling property. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the regional accrediting agency, has granted George Washington University accreditation. The Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (CUWMA), the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), and the Southeastern Universities Research Association all have academic affiliations with the university (SURA). University secured the ranking of #355 in QS World University Rankings. U.S. News and World Report ranked the University at #63 in National Universities (tie), #33 in Best Colleges for Veterans (tie) and #113 in Best Value Schools. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and the Virginia Science and Technology Campus are the university's three campuses. Foggy Bottom Campus takes GW students and faculty beyond the front row, immersing them in the bustle of D.C. life. This historic campus, which is located near the White House, the Kennedy Centre, and a variety of federal and international institutions, provides students with unrivalled opportunities and transforms the city into their classroom. Mount Vernon Campus, affectionately known as "The Vern," is a classic college campus just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Residence halls, academic buildings, sporting facilities, eating opportunities, a library, and even an outdoor challenge course are all located on the Vern, which is surrounded by rolling green hills. Students can choose from more than 75 majors at the university. The most popular majors at George Washington University include Social Sciences; Health Professions, Business, Management, Marketing Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Journalism.

Accomplishments and Alumni

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The university has a total of 21,363 students enrolled. Out of which, 52 per cent of the population is undergraduate students and the rest are enrolled as postgraduate students. Over 4,024 are international students at the university. There are over 2000 faculty staff, out of which 17 per cent are from overseas. The GW Centre for Career Services offers a wide range of individualized and customized career education services, convenient online resumes and interviews. Some of the top employers of university graduates are Deloitte, IBM, Amazon, Microsoft and Google.
