The American Psychological Foundation funds research work and projects of graduate students and PhD candidates through the Scott and Paul Pearsall Grant. This grant supports candidates working toward increasing public awareness and understanding of the psychological suffering of physically disabled people. Goals

APF offers Scott and Paul Pearsall Grant to researchers and students of Master’s-level programmes to increase public awareness about the stigma and psychological pain experienced by people surviving with physical disabilities. Here are the goals of this prestigious grant, offered to PhD and graduate students:

  • To encourage students of graduate programmes and early career researchers to align their academic learning and research interests with the understanding of the psychological pain experienced by persons with physical disabilities. People with these disabilities experience a lot of stigmas which leave a significant impact on their lives. 
  • Grant beneficiaries need to develop sensitive strategies to change public perception toward individuals living with visible disabilities, in order to reduce inhumane and hurtful treatment toward them. 
  • Encourage the penetration of findings of research and studies to the public. Dissemination of knowledge can be done through media.

Benefits

American Psychological Foundation grants $10,000 (INR 8,20,236) to eligible candidates. The beneficiaries can use this amount for direct administrative costs of the projects on which they have secured the grant. However, the beneficiaries cannot use the grant money to cover overhead costs or institutional indirect costs.

Eligibility

Candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria to avail of the Scott and Paul Pearsall Grant:

  • The applicant must be a full-time graduate student in a recognised university with a good ranking or be an early career psychologist. Early career researchers must apply within 10 years of completing their doctoral degree.
  • Applicants must have received approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Application Process

Candidates must produce the details of their project on the official website of APF to avail of the Scott and Paul Pearsall grant. Applicants are required to submit a proposal explaining the details of the project for which they are seeking funding. They are also required to submit some other documents which are mentioned in the following sections:

Proposal 

The document must not be more than 5 pages. Each graduate student and early career researcher must use 11-point Garamond or Times New Roman font, single spacing, and one-inch margins in their/his/her document. The proposal must be inclusive of:

  • Goals of the project
  • Literature review
  • Background
  • Methods applied to conduct the research. Candidates must provide details of assessment methods, procedures, and project design for proper evaluation by the APF.
  • Projected outcome and impact of the study.
  • Significance of the project.
