National Bird Day in India is celebrated to emphasize the issues faced by the bright and beautiful creatures that high spreading their beautiful feathers. It is celebrated every year on 5 January. 

Birds the colourful and beautiful creatures on earth are born to fly free in the sky. But many among us are impinging on the freedom of those little tweets. Millions of birds are captured for financial gain. As per an estimate of Born Free USA, approximately 12% of the world’s almost 10000 bird species are on the verge of extinction. So, National Birth Day focuses on the issue of both captive and wild birds.

History of National Bird Day

National Bird Day was originated from America. On 5 January 2002, Born Free USA together with the Avian Welfare Coalition started National Bird Day. 

The Avian Welfare Coalition aims to reduce the cruelty of birds by raising awareness about the destructive bird trade, and activities of cruel bird breeding mills, and improve the conditions of the birds in captivity. 

National Bird Day is celebrated on 5 January because it is the day of the yearly “Christmas Bird Count.”

Importance of National Bird Day

This day is celebrated to highlight the threats birds face due to illegal trading, diseases, or climatic changes. The condition of the birds is degrading due to manmade issues. The flying creature is losing their habitat and quality of life due to interference of humans in their habitat thereby disturbing the ecosystem. 

The most common issues are trading, global warming, deforestation, keeping birds as pets, and much more. Some exotic birds like eagles, macaws, and badgers are heavily traded for their beautiful feathers and they are even sold as food. Some birds that are on the verge of extinction are the Kakapo, Fruit Dove, Great Indian Bustard, Red Headed Vulture, Forest Owlet, Spoon Billed Sandpiper, Bengal Florican, etc are on the verge of extinction. Thus, to overcome all the above-mentioned issues we celebrate Bird Day on 5 January.
