What is the History of PSD?

In 1988, Adobe Systems Incorporated acquired the rights to distribute their products. This application (then called Display) piqued the interest of Thomas’s brother John, who worked for Industrial Light & Magic and suggested that Thomas expand it into a full-fledged photo editing program. Additionally, in 1988, Thomas put his studies on hold for six months to work on the program with his brother. Image Pro was already in use before Thomas altered the program’s name. Later that year, Thomas renamed his program Photoshop and collaborated briefly with slide scanner supplier Barneyscan to send out copies of Photoshop along with a slide scanner. As a result, “a total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were issued.”

What is the Use of PSD?

PSD is used for the following reasons:

  • Editing Flexibility: PSD files retain all layers, adjustments, and effects applied to an image in Photoshop, hence allowing users to easily make changes to individual elements without affecting the rest of the image.
  • Design Mockups: PSD files are commonly used in graphic design to create mockups for websites, applications, and print materials. Furthermore, designers can create layered compositions to visualise how elements will appear in the final product.
  • Image Manipulation: Photographers and digital artists use PSD files to perform complex image manipulations, such as retouching, compositing, and adding special effects, thanks to Photoshop’s extensive editing capabilities.
  • Collaboration and Sharing: PSD files promote collaboration among designers and creative professionals, as they can easily share editable files for feedback or further editing.
