The full form of CSAT is the Civil Servant Aptitude Test. It is a component of the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The CSAT was introduced in 2011 to assess the analytical and decision-making abilities of candidates appearing for the Civil Services Examination. The Significance of CSAT in UPSC
In the UPSC Prelims examination of UPSC, CSAT is the qualifying second paper. A candidate has to score 33% or 66 marks out of the total 200 marks to qualify for the paper. If the candidate fails to get these marks, he/she is no longer eligible to appear in the mains examination even after qualifying the cut-off of the first paper.
CSAT plays a crucial role in the selection process for candidates aspiring to join the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other central civil services. It serves as a screening test to shortlist candidates for the next stage of the examination, which includes the main examination and the interview.

Pattern and Syllabus of CSAT
The examination pattern of UPSC Prelims is it consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II.
- Paper I focuses on General Studies and tests the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of various subjects such as history, geography, economics, and current affairs.
- Paper II, on the other hand, is the aptitude test and evaluates the candidate’s problem-solving, logical reasoning, and comprehension skills.
The CSAT Paper II consists of 80 Multiple-type Questions which need to be attempted in 2 hours. Each correct question is rewarded with 2.5 marks while each incorrect answer attracts a negative marking of 0.83 marks ( deduction of ⅓ rd or 0.33% of the total marks allocated to a question).
The syllabus for the CSAT includes topics such as comprehension, logical reasoning and analytical ability, basic numeracy, decision-making, general mental ability, interpersonal skills, and communication skills.
