LMU's history, which began in 1472 in Ingolstadt when it became Bavaria’s first University, reflects the shifting currents that have shaped European history over the last 550 years. As one of the oldest universities in Europe, LMU has been at the epicenter of religious and political transformations in the past five centuries. Today, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is a large co-educational higher education institution in Munich, Germany with over 52,400 students that is officially recognised by the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst. The University is affiliated with European University Association (EUA) and the League of European Research Universities (LERU). It falls in the top 50 among world universities, placed at the 32nd position according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The four campuses of LMU are strategically located throughout Munich and are intended to inspire, expand, and enrich students’ minds. All campuses provide cutting-edge facilities and top-spec latest technology, as well as a comprehensive range of services and activities for students and academics. The historic Geschwister-Scholl-Platz Campus Main Building in the heart of Munich serves as the architectural centerpiece of LMU Munich, providing a historical backdrop that is seamlessly integrated into the surrounding streetscape. The University Library is located in the Main Building's south wing. It has 5 million volumes in its collection, which are housed in the Central Repository and 13 other depots. LMU offers over 300 degree programs, and plenty of summer courses, research and exchange opportunities and teacher education degrees — many of which are taught in English. LMU is a “University for Everyone.” Each year, the University organizes a series of lectures, the Studium Generale, which is open for everyone to attend, from within and outside the University! 

Accomplishments and Alumni 

Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is one of the oldest traditional universities in Europe that has today, expanded to deliver a truly “universitas” experience, for it spans all disciplines of study. The University has consistently received excellent ratings in international university rankings, both at institutional level and with respect to individual faculties. A top 100 world University, LMU is a University of Excellence; it has been successful in all the funding lines of the German Excellence Competition since it began in 2006. With its highly diversified array of disciplines, it has outstanding potential for pioneering research and has signed cooperation agreements with 600 partner universities worldwide to strengthen academic and research power. Further, 43 Nobel Laureates are associated with LMU till date. Among these are - Wilhelm Röntgen, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, Otto Hahn and Thomas Mann. The university’s network is more diverse and stronger than ever, with over millions of alumni worldwide.

Out of the total student population at LMU, there are 31,700+ women students and 9300+ international students.
