History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1826 as the Western Reserve College, in Hudson, Ohio, becoming the first College in Northern Ohio. In the 20th century, the College moved to uptown Cleveland in 1882 with funding from the American industrialist, Amasa Stone to meet the demands of the post-war economy. It was later merged with the Case School of Applied Sciences to become the nation's leading institution, the Case Western Reserve University in 1967. The university joined the Association of American Universities in 1969 and is also affiliated with the Association of Independent Technological Universities (AITU), the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). It is also one of the coveted space-grant institutions in the US. The university globally ranks #162 by the QS World University Rankings and #121 by the Times Higher Education for 2022. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The Casa Reserve University campus is located in uptown Cleveland, right in the midst of the University Circle, which is Cleveland’s one of the most robust communities. Academically, Case Western reserve is structured into 8 Schools, namely College of Arts and Sciences, School of Dental Medicine, Case School of Engineering, School of Law, Weatherhead School of Management, School of Medicine, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. Nearly 95 Undergraduate degree choices, 135 Graduate and professional options and 140 dual degree programs are offered at the University. Further, there are 100 interdisciplinary academic and Research Centers and Institutes on the campus. Plenty of recreation opportunities exist on and around the campus, including hundreds of student clubs, and the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in the University Circle. Also, there are a number of intramural sports and clubs along with 121 fitness options. You might participate in Group Exercise classes during your time at the campus. 

Accomplishments and Alumni

Case Western Reserve ranks #19 among the 26 private institutions in federal expenditures for Science and Engineering research and development, according to the National Science Foundation 2020. According to Brookings Institution's 2017 report, the University also ranks #13 for translating Research into Commercial Success  Professor Claude Beck at Case Western was the first professor of Cardiovascular Surgery. The university is known for its research education in the field of Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering. Case Western Reserve alumni number more than 121,000 and have a long list of accomplishments. Our alumni have founded businesses, received Nobel Prizes, altered politics and social justice, revolutionized the way we watch movies, run, and safeguard computers, among many other achievements. Some of the notable alumni of Case Western Research University are - Anthony Russo (Film Producer and Director, Director of Captain America), Fred Gray (Civil Rights Attorney), Craig Newmark (Tech Billionaire, Philanthropist and Founder of Craigslist), Edward C. Prescott (American Economist and Winner of 2004 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics) and Paul Buchheit (American Engineer and Entrepreneur, Creator of Gmail)

Student Diversity And Visiting Companies

The total student population at Case Western Reserve University is 12,000+ consisting of 5,000+ undergraduate and 7,000+ postgraduate students approximately. Further, nearly 94 countries are represented on the campus. Records show that the class of 2023 had 82% population outside of Ohio and almost 16% were from outside the United States. The international students acceptance rate for the class of 2023 is around 27%. CWRU emphasizes on experiential learning and career development of the students extensively. Nearly 69% of the University’s students hold at least one Internship.
