The full form of UTI is Urinary Tract Infection. It refers to a commonly occurring infection in your urinary system that involves your kidneys, urethra, bladder, and ureters. UTIs generally infect your lower urinary tract system which includes the urethra and the bladder. Moreover, women are more prone to UTIs than men. Causes of UTI

  • Urinary Tract Infections or UTIs occur when the bacteria enters the urinary tract of your system through the urethra.
  • Although the urinary system is designed to prevent bacteria from entering, it can sometimes fail to do so.
  • When this happens, bacteria start growing and cause infection. 
  • In most cases, the UTI is caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a type of bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Having unprotected sex can also lead to UTIs in a person.

How to Prevent UTIs?

Here are a few effective ways to lower the risk of urinary tract infection:

  • Make sure to drink plenty of water and other fluids such as coconut water.
  • If nothing else works, change your birth control method. 
  • After urinating or a bowel movement, use the toilet paper to wipe from front to back to prevent the spread of bacteria from your anus to your vagina. 
  • Do not use products made for intimate areas as they can irritate and cause extreme discomfort.
