The full form of QBASIC is Quick Beginner’s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. Developed by Microsoft, QBASIC refers to a beginner’s guide to programming. QBASIC is a programming language and integrated development environment (IDE) released in the mid-1980s to replace GW-BASIC. The primary aim was to make learning programming language a piece of cake. Moreover, it was even included with various versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Features of QBASIC

QBASIC was quite popular during the 1980s and 1990s. However, it was soon replaced by modern programming languages like C++, Python, and Java. It was renowned for its array of features such as:

  • Interpreted Language: Since QBASIC is an interpreted language, it does not need to be compiled before it can run. This makes it easier for newbies to write, test, and subsequently debug their code. 
  • Compatibility: QBASIC was compatible with numerous versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. 
  • Beginner-friendly syntax: QBASIC offered an easy-to-understand syntax along with familiar commands and control structures like subroutines, if-then statements, etc.
  • Integrated development environment: QBASIC was also armed with IDE that offered a debugger, an interpreter, and a code editor.

Types of QBASIC

There are two types of QBASIC:

1. QBASC

  • It is the official version of the software which was released by Microsoft during the 1980s. 
  • This version is a command-line-based programming language.
  • It is easy to learn. 

2. QASIC with Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

  • This version comes with a GUI or Graphical User Interface.
  • It is equipped with additional features such as an in-built help documentation, debugger, and code editor. 

Limitations of QBASIC

The limitations of QBASIC include:

  • It does not possess the capabilities of modern programming languages.
  • QBASIC is no longer well supported and thus, has been replaced.
  • It is not suited for advanced or complex programming projects. 
  • QBASIC is not compatible with newer versions of Microsoft Windows.
