- It was founded by a Scottish banker, Thomas Sutherland, in the then-British colony of British Hong Kong in 1865
- It opened its branches in Shanghai in the same year of foundation
- It incorporated formally for the first time in 1865
- In 1980, it received 51% of the shareholding in US-based Marine Midland Bank, which was then extended to full ownership in 1987
- In 1992, it purchased the Bank from Midland and created a new holding company, HSBC Holdings plc 1992. The headquarters of HSBC were relocated to London post the establishment of the new company
- In 1998, the idea of using the company’s initials as the brand name; HSBC came into the picture
- In 2017, Douglas Flint became the first non-executive and external chairman of the HSBC Board of Directors
