- 2019: The “2019” in COVID-19 refers to the year when the disease was first identified. It is there to differentiate it from other coronaviruses, such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2002 and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) in 2012, which were named based on their outbreak years.
It was also called Novel Coronavirus. The “Novel” in the term is referred to as “New Coronavirus”.

Who Named COVID-19?
The name COVID-19 was coined by the World Health Organization (WHO) when the disease emerged in December 2019. WHO named it “to enable discussion on disease prevention, spread, transmissibility, severity, and treatment”.
In a press conference on February 11, 2020, WHO officially announced the name COVID-19 after a cumulative agreement of the name between the World Organization for Animal Health and the FAO of the UN. The name was chosen because it did not represent any animal, geographical location, or community.

What is the Origin of COVID-19?
