The full form of AML is acute myeloid leukemia. Also known as acute myelogenous leukemia, it is a type of cancer that causes the bone marrow of the patient to produce a large number of blood cells. AML is the most commonly occurring type of acute leukemia in adults. Moreover, there are numerous subtypes of acute myeloid leukemia.

Signs and Symptoms of AML
The early signs and symptoms of acute myeloid leukemia include:
- Weakness in body
- Fever
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Paleness
In some more serious cases, the acute myeloid leukemia may show signs such as:
- Tumor of myeloid cells (chloroma)
- Clusters of leukemia cells in testicles or central nervous system (CNS)

What are the 4 Stages of AML?
As of now, there is no standard staging system for acute myelogenous leukemia. Nonetheless, medical practitioners often describe it as:
Newly diagnosed AML
- The disease has not been treated except to relieve early symptoms like fever and bleeding.
- The blood count is abnormal.
- Around 20% of the total cells in the bone marrow cells are leukemia cells.
AML in Remission
- The treatment has begun.
- The blood count becomes normal again.
- Leukemia cells reduce up to 5%
AML in Remission
- The disease has been treated.
- The blood count returns to normal.
- Leukemia cells reduce less and become less than 5% in the body.
- The patient stops showing signs and symptoms of leukemia.
Refractory or Recurrent AML
- In some cases, patients with newly diagnosed acute myelogenous leukemia will not go into remission. This is known as refractory cancer.
- On the other hand, the AML might come back in the blood or bone marrow of the patient after remission. This is known as recurrent AML.
