Origin of AGMARK

They combined “Ag” for agriculture and “mark” for a certification mark to create the term “AGMARK.”

  • A bill presented in the Parliament of India introduced AGMARK under the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking Act).
  • Archibald MacDonald Livingstone, the Government of India’s Agricultural and Marketing Advisory from 1934 to 1941, designed the entire Agmark system, including the name. 
  • The system was created to help small farmers in India who, in the lack of quality certification, risked having their produce valued at less by dealers than it was.

Laboratories of AGMARK in India

Numerous Central and Regional AGMARK Laboratories have been established by the Indian government. If farmers or manufacturers meet the requirements outlined by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, they can obtain an AGMARK certification for their products. The state-owned laboratories are fully authorized to conduct the testing and issue the AGMARK certification. While the Central AGMARK Laboratory is located only in Nagpur, regional AGMARK laboratories are located in 11 different countries, which are as follows:
