Pride Month Celebrations Around the World

The world celebrates Pride Month in the month of June every year supporting the LGBTQ+ community and their right to live a life with dignity and respect. In June, the LGBTQIA community as well as its allies host parades, festivals and celebrations to come together and celebrate the idea of ‘Love is Love’! The LGBTQ community have been fighting to get equal right to have their own families, to get married, to adopt children, fighting discrimination and hate speech, and for basic human rights. It is the month to educate people about equality and love regardless of one’s sexuality, and raise voices for equal rights for the LGBTQ community! So, here we bring you the best pride month celebrations around the world from pride parades to festivals and parties you must know!

Global Pride

In 2020, there was a 24-hour live stream that had cast segments from around the world. It was similar to a New Year’s Eve broadcast. It featured appearances from drag artists like Pabllo Vittar from Brazil and Courtney Act from Australia, as well as queer icons like Olivia Newton-John and Deborah Cox, and a highly anticipated musical performance by the Dixie Chicks. World leaders like Prime Minister Xavier Bettel of Luxembourg, India’s first openly gay prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, and President Carlos Alvarado Quesada of Costa Rica, which became the first Central American country to legalize same-sex marriage were also present in the live stream to address everyone. 

NYC Pride

New York City is the birthplace of the LGBTQ rights movement and NYC Pride honours Pride Month in a unique fashion every year. Last year, New York City hosted World Pride in honor of the 50th anniversary of the city’s Stonewall Riots, which launched a new civil rights movement for LGBTQ+ people. 

Denver Virtual PrideFest

Last year, Denver’s Pride held a socially distanced race and fundraiser in support of LGBTQ+ community. This year as well, to keep everyone safe, they are celebrating Pride Month by submitting virtual parade unit videos that will be strung together to create the 2021 Coors Light Virtual Denver Pride Parade.

Seattle Pride

The organizations that produce Seattle’s Pride events—Seattle Pride Parade, PrideFest at Seattle Center, Trans Pride, and Seattle Pride in the Park—have come up with a Together For Pride virtual celebration. ‘Taking Pride in Capitol Hill’ is all set for June 6, 2021, for communities to come together and share the love. 

Madrid Pride

Spain, which hosts one of Europe’s largest Pride festivals, completed 15 years of marriage equality in 2020. To celebrate, Madrid Pride hosted events on June 28 (the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City), and a range of interactive online activities that continued till July 5. This year, the pride month parade is taking place on July 3, with restrictions due to the coronavirus.

Dublin Digital Pride Festival & Parade

Dublin Pride 2021 was officially launched on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia (May 17th). The theme for Dublin Pride 2021 is Community, with a focus on promoting the important work of LGBTQ+ organisations. As the biggest LGBTQ+ fundraising events of the year, they are launching the Dublin Pride Community Fund at The Community Foundation for Ireland. All proceeds will go directly towards supporting LGBTQ+ organisations affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Stockholm Pride Summer Stream

The theme for this year’s Stockholm Pride is “The key to freedom”, a reminder of what the Pride movement was from the beginning – a demonstration and manifestation of rights that give freedom to be who you are and love those you want. The event is open to everyone who wants to participate and contribute items to the program at Pride House, Pride Parade or in Pride City during the festival to keep the theme in mind and have the change together. 

Berlin Pride Month

In Berlin, it is known as Queer History Month instead of LGBT History Month. Every year, it takes place in June. It educates people about sexual diversity and anti-discrimination through small projects. During Pride Month, people are able to find detailed lessons on queer history suitable for both school and non-school education. Also, educational institutions provide education to schools and youth institutions directly.

United Kingdom Pride Month

LGBT+ History Month is an annual event in the United Kingdom taking place every February. The Month is intended as a means to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against the LGBT community while celebrating its achievement and diversity and making it more visible. Pride Month or History Month has three taglines -‘ Claiming our past. Celebrating our present. Creating our future’, in addition to the ‘Educate OUT Prejudice’ motto.
