1931 – Kanpur Riots
Fifty people were killed in the Kanpur riots that broke out in India. Mahatma Gandhi was one of many people assaulted.

1609 – Henry Hudson’s exploration
Henry Hudson started exploration for the Dutch East India Company with an aim to find a passage to Asia.

1776 – George Washington
Continental Congress authorized a medal for the 1st US president George Washington.

1807 – Abolition of the slave trade in Britain
British Parliament abolished the slave trade throughout the British Empire while adding a penalty of £120 per slave introduced for ship captains.

1898 – Imprisonment of O Henry
Writer O. Henry, renowned for his short story, the last leaf sentenced to 5 years in prison for embezzling $854 from a bank reportedly to pay for his sick wife’s medical bills.

1919 – Formation of League of Nations
Woodrow Wilson’s dream of a League of Nations came true after the League Covenant was adopted at the Paris Peace Conference.

1955 – Howl: Allen Ginsberg
United States Customs seized copies of Allen Ginsberg’s controversial poem “Howl” and declared it obscene.

1960 – DH Lawrence: Lady Chatterley’s Lover
After an ongoing battle, the Lady Chatterley’s Lover was declared not obscene by NYC.

1961 – Sputnik 10
Sputnik 10 carried a dog into Earth orbit which was later recovered.

1965 – Martin Luther King Jr
Martin Luther King, a civil rights activist Jr. led 25,000 protestors and civilians to the state capitol in Montgomery, Alabama.

2015 – Zayn Malik quits 1D
British musician Zayn Malik announced his departure from the band One Direction.

1921 – Simone Signoret
Simone Signoret is a French actress born in Wiesbaden, Germany.

1934 – Gloria Steinem
Renowned American Feminist, publisher and journalist was born in Toledo, Ohio.

1947 – Elton John
Elton John, a famous English singer-songwriter was born in Pinner, Middlesex.
