Over 60k Indian Students Pick Canada as Study Destination in First Half of 2022

Less competitive market, more opportunities for international students in Canada
In 2019, prior to the pandemic, above 1 lakh Indian students had chosen Canada which dipped to 43,624, after Covid-19 broke out. The number later rose sharply to 1,02,688 in 2021, according to the MEA.

The first half of 2022 has seen at least sixty thousand students opt to study in Canada. The country is the second most popular destination for Indian students to pursue academic degrees on foreign shores, the first being the United States of America.

The growth in the number of Indian students in the country nearly mirrors the situation in the USA. The data provided by MEA shows that as many as 64,667 Indian students named the USA their study destination. Canada closely followed this with 60,258 students opting for the same.

1,32,620 Indian students had opted to study in Canada before the Pandemic hit, which dipped to 43,624 after the Corona Virus broke out in 2020. However, according to MEA, 2021 saw a sharp rise in students opting for Canada, taking the figure to 1,02,688. 

According to a Canadian ed-tech firm, ApplyBoard, the number of Indian students studying in Canada nearly grew by 220% between 2016 and 2021.

Moreover, most students choose business programs as their area of study. With this, the number of Indian students that were approved to study business and management in Canada also grew from a little over 10,000 in 2016 to nearly 50,000 in 2021.
