The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam is a standardized computer-based test, conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and various institutes under IITs (Indian Institute of Engineering) on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE. It is a national-level test that aims to evaluate a student’s understanding of various Engineering and Science subjects. The scores obtained in this exam enable candidates to gain admission into various prestigious PG programs namely Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Technology (MTech), and PhD programs in IITs and IISc. Even Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the country like HPCL, SAIL, BHEL, BEL, etc. also accept GATE scores. GATE Eligibility Criteria 

To appear in the GATE Exam, the application process can be carried out online. But before getting to the registration process, it is important to ensure that you are fulfilling the GATE eligibility requirements. The following sections explain the prerequisites that have been specified for the test:

General Eligibility Requirements

Given below are the GATE eligibility requirements that every aspirant needs to satisfy before applying for this exam: 

  • Candidates of Indian nationality as well as from countries other than India are eligible to apply for the GATE exam.
  • There is no age bar or restriction under the specified GATE eligibility.
  • The candidate must have completed graduation in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree in an equivalent field of science.
  • Those students who are in the final year of graduation (engineering/technology) can also apply for the GATE Exam, but they must have to submit a provisional certificate from their institute’s principal.

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023: Paper Wise

Since the GATE exam comprises of different papers for students from varied science backgrounds, the requirements for each paper are distinctive. To help you further in your research, we have elaborated the GATE eligibility prerequisites for different papers below:

B.Tech/B.E./B.Pharm.

The candidate must have completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology or a 3-year BSc/ Diploma in Engineering/Technology along with senior higher secondary education (10+2) or those who are in the final year of these programmes are also allowed under the GATE eligibility criteria.

Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch)

The aspirant is required to have completed a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree along with senior higher secondary education (10+2) or those who are in the final year of the program can also apply for the GATE exam.

M.Sc/MA/MCA

As per the GATE eligibility requirements, those who have completed a master’s degree in Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent or those who are in the final year of these postgraduate courses can appear in the exam.

BSc. Research/ B.S. Students

The candidate ought to have completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Science or a postgraduate diploma in Science after concluding their senior higher secondary education (10+2).

Integrated M.Tech./M.E. (Post B.Sc)

The student must have attained a 4-year integrated master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or those appearing in the 2nd/3rd/4th year are also allowed to apply as per the GATE eligibility conditions. 

M.E./M.Tech. or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2)

Those who have completed a 5-year Integrated Dual Degree program or Master’s degree program in Engineering /Technology or are currently appearing in the 4th/5th year can register for the exam as specified in the GATE eligibility criteria.

Integrated M.Sc./ Integrated B.S./M.S.

The aspirant must have concluded an Integrated M.Sc. or a 5-year Integrated BSc-MSc program or those who are currently appearing in the final year are also eligible to appear in GATE Exam.

For Professional Society Examinations (equivalent to B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Arch.)

For this paper, the candidate is required to have completed their degree in B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch. or equivalent examinations from Professional Societies which are acknowledged by UPSC/MHRD/AICTE as per the GATE eligibility.

FAQ

Can degree students apply for GATE?

Yes. Candidates in the final year of any undergraduate degree can apply for GATE. Moreover, a student who has already completed any government-approved degree program in any engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, or arts degree is eligible to appear in the gates 2024 exam.

How much percentage is required for GATE eligibility?

There is no percentage criteria for B.Tech . However, when it comes to IITs or NIT, a 60% in BE or B. Tech or other equivalent qualification is required.

Who is not eligible for GATE exam?

There is no minimum or maximum age for the GATE exam. Moreover, graduates of technology/engineering/arts/commerce or postgraduates of relevant disciplines are considered as eligible applicants.
