History, Affiliations and Rankings

In 1798, the Kentucky General Assembly awarded the University of Louisville a license to establish a higher education institution in the newly created city of Louisville. In 1837, the Louisville City Council established the Louisville Medical Institute on the recommendation of famous physician and medical author Charles Caldwell. When the Kentucky legislature amalgamated the Louisville Medical Institute, the Louisville Collegiate Institution, and a newly created law school on a location directly east of Downtown Louisville in 1846, the University of Louisville was born. The university grew fast in the twentieth century, with the establishment of new schools of liberal arts, graduate studies, dentistry, engineering, music and social work. UofL is affiliated with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), and space-grant colleges. The university is also affiliated with NCAA Division I FBS and ACC. The University of Louisville is also committed to being a national leader in anti-racist urban research. In 2019, Forbes Magazine ranked the University #431 out of 650 universities, colleges, and service academies in the United States, 147th for public colleges, 87th for institutions in the American South, and #182 for top U.S. research university.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

In the Louisville region, the institution includes three campuses: Belknap, Health Science, and Shelby. It also includes an International Campus in Panama City, Panama, as well as satellite campuses around Kentucky and internationally. Nonremedial tutoring, women's centre, placement service, day care, health service, and health insurance are among the student services provided by the University of Louisville. The University of Louisville also provides 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late-night transport/escort service, lit pathways/sidewalks, student patrols, and controlled dormitory access as part of its campus safety and security services (key, security card, etc.). At the University of Louisville, 24% of students have automobiles on campus. The University of Louisville offers over 200 degree programmes in a variety of subjects. One Pulitzer Prize winner for Theatre (Marsha Norman, BFA 1969), a 10-time NFL pro-bowler (Johnny Unitas), the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner (Lamar Jackson), the Minority Leader of the United States Senate (Mitch McConnell, BA 1964), the first female director of the CIA (Gina Haspel, BA 1978), the former Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley (Chang-Lin Tien, MEng 1983), and a long list of governors, senators, mayors, US Attorneys and CEOs.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The University of Louisville has a total enrolment of around 21,670 students. There are 11,560 undergraduate students and 4,071 graduate students. The full-time undergraduate population of UofL is made up of 55% women and 45% males. Women make up around 53% of full-time graduate students, while males make up 47%. This school is more popular among females than males. At the University of Louisville, there are around 11,673 female students and 9,997 male students.
