History, Affiliations and Rankings
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) started as an idea in 1989, when the leaders of Hong Kong wanted to construct a world-class, research-focused university to serve as the center of knowledge advancement and economic growth in the Pearl River Delta Region. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology officially opened in 1991 and has since, risen in global ranks becoming a top 100 world University, and #3 in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is affiliated with ASAIHL, APRU and Washington University in St. Louis McDonnell International Scholars Academy. The University also offers a top-ranked Executive MBA program in partnership with the Kellogg School of Management in the United States. It ranks at #34 in the QS World University Rankings 2022 and #66 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The HKUST campus is a 60-hectare infrastructure with four academic schools offering programs in Sciences, Engineering, Business and Management, Humanities and Social Science. The campus provides a friendly community and a beautiful environment. There are a large number of research courses that are available in many subject areas which strive to provide scope for all students to collaborate with industry experts. Nine Undergraduate halls located along the seafront and mid-rise terraces of the university campus make the student residence. The on-campus library allows seating for over 3,000 students. This helps students to concentrate and access study material comfortably. The University offers over 200 courses across a number of disciplines related to Science and Technology.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology had 500+ students joining the Hong Kong Government's STEM Internship Scheme, the maximum among participating local universities. 81% of the research conducted at HKUST was recognized as "internationally excellent" or "world leading" and 89% of the research impact cases had "considerable or outstanding impacts." Further, the University had the highest percentage of "world leading" research among all participating local universities in the UGC Research Assessment Exercise 2020. Also, in the academic year 2020-21. HKUST funded 1,500+ research projects, disclosed 176 inventions, launched 270+ HKUST-incubated start-ups and spin-offs. The Financial Times ranked the University's Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program at #2 worldwide in the Global EMBA Rankings. The alumni network of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology reached far and wide as there are students from all over the world who come to study here. The alumni community has 88,286+ graduates worldwide till date. Some of the most notable people who are associated with HKUST are Frank Wang (CEO of DJI), Chan Yik Hei (Inventor and Young Entrepreneur), Koni Lui (Model) and Alfred Cheung (Chinese Actor).

HKUST has a student population of 16,195+ out of which 366 come from outside Asia, while 1,306 come from other countries in Asia, creating a diverse composition of students on the campus.
