The Cleveland State University (CSU) was founded in the 1880s when the Cleveland YMCA began giving evening and day classes to disadvantaged students. The YMCA curriculum was restructured as the Association Institute in 1906, and Fenn College was founded in 1929. Cleveland State University was founded as a state-aided college in 1964, and it took over Fenn College's campus, curriculum, and faculty. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has granted university accreditation. Cleveland Law School was the first evening law school in the United States and one of the first to give admission to women and minorities.  Another evening law school called the John Marshall School of Law, was founded in 1916. Both the schools were later merged to become the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law in 1946.

The university has been classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity. It has also been ranked #299-391 nationally by Global Universities - US News & World Report 2022 and #1201-1400 internationally in QS World University Rankings 2023.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The main campus of Cleveland State University spans 85 acres in size and comprises more than 40 buildings. It is located in the heart of downtown Cleveland. The campus features a top-notch infrastructure with the best amenities. The University Library, several faculty offices, and large classrooms are all housed in the nineteen-story Rhodes Tower. Aside from academics, the campus provides facilities for sports such as basketball, golf, fencing, soccer, wrestling, and swimming among others. Over 1,000 graduate, undergraduate, honors, professional certificate, and continuing education courses are available in over 200 fields, including accounting, sports, anthropology, arts, design, sciences, business, communication, engineering, mathematics, nursing, philosophy, pharmacy, economics, education, film, psychology, and social work.

Accomplishments and Alumni

It has 511 qualified professors and over 15,000 students, including almost 1,400 international students. It is known for its partnerships with more than 250 industrial and governmental organizations and higher education institutions that include Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, NASA Glenn Research Centre. CSU has nearly 120,000 alumni globally, including a number of notable figures such as Frank G. Jackson (Mayor of Cleveland), Tim Russert (American Journalist), Louis Stakes ( Former United States Representative), Pamela Evette (Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

CSU caters to the academic demands of around 15,464 students, of which there are 1,400 international students. CSU has an undergraduate gender distribution of 45% male students and 55% female students. About 1/3 students are in graduate school or law school at CSU.

Thus, promotes rich student diversity on its campus. Some of the leading visiting companies at CSU are - Nestle, Jacobs, Endeavor, Amazon, PNC, EY, KeyBank etc.
