History, Affiliations and Rankings

San Francisco State University abbreviated as SFSU, USA is a public research institution founded in the year 1899. SFSU is a part of the California State University System. San Francisco State University was formerly known as San Francisco State Normal School. The institution had its first graduating class in 1901. In 1972, the institution finally gained university status and was finally renamed San Francisco State University. SFSU has got the accreditation from Western Association of Schools and Colleges. San Francisco State University has athletic affiliations with NCAA Division II – CCAA. San Francisco State University ranks #121 - 130 in US Uni. (Universities) by the QS Rankings and #401-500th in US College Rankings 2022 by Times Higher Education and #1175 place in US News and World Report global university ranking.  Its setting is Urban and it follows a semester-based academic calendar. San Francisco State University's motto is “Experiences Teaches”. Gator (alligator) is the official mascot of SFSU.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

San Francisco State University's main campus spreads out 144 acres of land in the southwest corner of the town. There are 12 academic buildings, 8 residential buildings and communities including a gymnasium, cox stadium and maliney field SFSU possesses. The main sites of the institutes include Romberg Tiburon Center, Sierra Nevada Field Campus, and the Downtown campus. The Mashouf Wellness Center is the social hub of the institute providing health, recreation, and wellness courses. There are over 200 active student communities that match a wide range of student's interests. San Francisco State University provides numerous courses including bachelor's, master's, PhD programs, credentials, and certificate courses in a variety of faculties. San Francisco State University offers 118 bachelor's degrees, 94 master's degrees, 26 teaching credentials and 5 doctoral degrees. The University also provides a Doctor of Education course (Ed D.) with 2 specializations, a clinical doctorate of physical therapy (D.P.T.) and a PhD in Education. 

Accomplishments and Alumni 

San Francisco State University highly learned faculty has received numerous honours and awards including the MacArthur Foundation genius grant, Presidential “Young Investor” Award, Guggenheim Award, Full Bright Scholar Award, and the most famous Pulitzer Prize for music. SFSU has received $ 10 million as an award from the National Institute of Health to support biomedical research and encourage to pursue biomedical research as a career. The University Department of Health Education in collaboration with the San Francisco government offers a Master of Public Health program i.e., only two in the country focusing on Urban Health and Social Justice. San Francisco State University Doctoral Research Program is highly acknowledged among the research fraternity. San Francisco State University has been awarded institutional accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The notable alumni of the institute are Stanley Mazor, co-inventor of the microprocessor, Annette Bening, actress, and Yvonne Cagle, NASA astronaut.

San Francisco State University values diversity in all its dimensions. The University has more than 26,600 student enrolments, out of which 23,300 are undergraduates, more than 2,900 are postgraduates with more than 2,000 faculty within the premises. They have more than 2,300 international students on campus. The male-to-female ratio is 45:55 at San Francisco State University making it a fairly gender-balanced university.
