About Malaysian International Scholarship  

Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government for international students who are planning to pursue Postgraduate and Postgraduate Doctoral programs in Malaysian universities. Through this scholarship, the Malaysian Government wants to attract and retain the brightest minds which will help establish Malaysia as an excellent country in the field of academia on the global stage. MIS is extended for the students of 85 countries which include ASEAN countries as well. 

Students can submit the application form online by filling out all the required details and attaching the necessary documents. In the application form, students can choose up to 3 Malaysian universities of their choice for pursuing either a postgraduate degree or a Ph.D. program.

Expenses Covered Under Malaysian International Scholarship 

Following are all of the expenses covered under MIS which will aid students in their higher education.

  • Tuition fees 
  • Air ticket from student’s place to Malaysia.
  • Selected students will get a monthly maintenance allowance.
  • Health insurance that will cover students’ medical expenses.
  • Every year students will receive grants for books and internal travel.
  • Selected students who will be pursuing Ph.D. and Postdoctoral programs will get an allowance for a thesis – a part of the amount will be paid at the beginning of the research and the remaining amount will be given once the student will submit the thesis. 
  • Grant for installation and termination.

Application Process 

To apply for the Malaysian International Scholarship students need to ensure they are accepted by one of the universities of Malaysia. Following this, students need to follow the below-mentioned steps in order to apply for MIS (applications can only be submitted through online mode on the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia portal):

  • First, students need to register their passport number / national identification number, email address, and password.
  • Then, log in to fill out the application form. Make sure you fill out all the required details carefully. 
  • Proofread the entire application to make sure every detail is correct after which you can submit the application. Print the application form and then log out. 

Eligibility Criteria 

Students who want to apply for Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) need to meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • If the student wants to apply for a Master’s program then they should not be more than 40 years whereas if the student wants to apply for Ph.D. then they should not be more than 45 years.
  • Master’s applicants should have scored at least 3.5 / 4.0 CGPA or second class at the Undergraduate level and Ph.D. applicants also should have scored at least 3.5 / 4.0 or excellent results at the Master’s level. In addition to this, for post-doctoral programs, the selection will be made on the basis of the number of books produced by the candidate, referred / non-refereed journals, portfolio, and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must showcase the ability and knowledge related to research work.
  • The candidate must have taken a standardized English proficiency test and the certificate of the test should not be older than 2 years from the date of application submitted by the applicant. The minimum test scores required in the English proficiency test are – If the student has taken IELTS then the minimum mark required for the same is 6.5. If the applicant has undertaken TOEFL then the student must have scored at least 580 marks or 230 marks in a computer-based test or 92 marks in the internet-based test. 
  • Students who are applicants for the research-based program should write a proposal that is relevant to the interests and needs of Malaysia. 
  • The candidate must be in good health which they need to prove by a certificate issued by a medical professional / Doctor. The cost of the same has to be incurred by the applicant.
  • The candidate must have applied and secured admission either in a Postgraduate or Post-Doctoral program in Malaysia. (Conditional letter or offer letter will be accepted at the time of scholarship application as proof of acceptance by the Malaysian Universities)

Documents Required

The applicants need to attach the following documents with the printed application form:

  • Recently clicked passport-size photographs.
  • Medical Report
  • Copy of current passport which shows the status of the citizenship of the student.
  • Academic transcripts, testimonials, and references related to the relevant study, co-curriculum activities, and achievements.
  • Clearly charted out a research plan. 
  • Copy of standardized English language proficiency test certificate (TOEFL / IELTS)
  • Copy of CV / Resume 
  • Admission letter from Malaysian University
  • Two LORs 
  • Endorsement form

Conditions for Scholarship Award

Following are some of the conditions that the candidate needs to adhere to in order to become eligible for the Malaysian International Scholarship:

  • The student who is awarded MIS has to pursue full-time Post graduation and Post Doctoral programs at one of the Malaysian universities.
  • Scholarship holders need to confirm their admission to the university.
  • The scholarship holder cannot change their program during the scholarship tenure and if they want to change then the student needs to provide written permission from the university and the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.
  • MIS awardees cannot undertake any paid employment during their tenure and if they want to work then they need to provide written permission from their universities. 
  • MIS awards are meant for students who will study in Malaysian universities. Therefore, the research must be completed in Malaysia. 
  • Scholarship awardees must maintain good academic performance or the scholarship can be withdrawn. 
  • The Malaysian International Scholarship does not guarantee a visa. Therefore, students need to take care of all the formalities related to visa application and medical examination. 
  • Students who are awarded MIS need to adhere to the prescribed code of conduct and rules by the university. Failing to do so, if the students get suspended by the university then the MIS will also get suspended immediately. No monthly allowance will be given during suspension which also includes suspension because of illness.
